Winter Nights Give Us a Thrashing EP

An EP release from Winter Nights brings out a brutal death metal approach that actually brings together several subgenres of metal and blends them to create something highly impactful with an unreal and fiery energy but also a ferocious approach that hits like a sucker punch to the gut.

The Northern Solitude EP wastes zero time hitting hard with inventive and thrashing riffs and guitar tones. The entire EP comes crashing down with a wave of sonic tonality and drive that grabs you and slams you into the ground by hitting as hard as it can.

The EP spans three tracks and none of them are the same. They do have some surprises around the corners and are inventive in terms of the riffs because each track delivers a bit of a new side to how these guys do their thing.

You get elements of hardcore, grindcore, blackened metal, and more because certain songs focus a little bit more on the melodic side of things than they do on the thrashing speed that others focus on.

This kind of gives you an idea of some of the influences these guys bring into the mix.

The drumming on this release is completely blistering and those kick drums cut through everything super well giving this record a sharp but brutal low end at the same time.

When you listen to this record in a car it just destroys.

The way this record was put together and mixed is important as well. I don't always touch on the mix of albums to a record that encompasses such a span of thriving death and speed, thrash-style metal, the mix is kind of important to touch on because that's how everything comes across with the aesthetic it needs to.

In actuality, the energy on this record is what's most insane about it. It feels almost like the tracks were recorded live on the floor to an extent and everyone in the band was just feeding off of each other's energies the entire time.

Of course, I wasn't there so I can't know that but listening to the EP makes you want to see them live simply because if that kind of energy is captured on record, then you know immediately that seeing them live will be a face-melter.

I can't tell you how much I love hearing a record and knowing immediately that that band will crush it live.

I feel like it's hard to capture this kind of energy on record but listening to certain kinds of death and thrash metal like Slayer for example, I can totally understand what these guys are pulling it from.

As I mentioned before, there are no two songs that really go in the same direction. Some songs are a bit more stretched and widened with vastness in their underbellies, and more doom metal in a way. I like the mix of approaches because this is exactly what I meant by having some surprises around the corners.

The record is lyrically quite robust. A lot of the lyrics are extremely descriptive but can also be semi-metaphoric at the same time. I do feel like some of this is in true classic death metal style, but I love the inventive approach to how some of the lyrics are built and put together.

Listening to the EP on Bandcamp is one of the ways that you can go through the lyrics while you listen to the record and it's one of the most fun ways to check this record out.

Being able to know what the lyrics are helps us understand where some of the songs are coming from and grab hold of some of the personality behind these tracks as well.

I can't go on without just mentioning of course the guitar work across this record is outstanding. Everything is super tight but again, inventive and hits with this amazing drive and energy that encompasses you.

This was an awesome release that didn't let up for even one second and showcased this band's ability to create songs with some diversity but still stay within that thrash and death metal range while surprising you and putting together something with a solid fire binding.

If you're a fan of any kind of real thrash-style metal, you're going to absolutely love this record so don't waste any more time.

Check this out, listen to it loud, and remember where you heard it first.
