Two new single releases from Sylvia Rose Novak just dropped, and each of them showcases a bit of a different side to her personality, but also gives off a robust and full-bodied, sonically lush pop-rock approach that becomes very addictive.
The first of the two singles is called "Want To Play", which absolutely gives little pieces of the artist lyrically. She's being very truthful and honest and telling her story, and in doing so, you're getting a bit of emotion as well.
Sonic presents. The guitar tones are nice and heavy, but they're not overwhelming. They have a great balance to them and let you hear the chord progressions and riffs perfectly. While all that is happening, you also have this great edginess that combines with elements of color so that you have a bright rock approach and aesthetic.
Her vocals are a balance between being a little bit smooth and also a bit intense. She's really able to display some of that emotion, especially in this track.
One of my favorite aspects in terms of the way she records is that she double-tracks her vocals a lot of the time. This track showcases those double-tracked vocal approaches, and that works to thicken up the track itself.
She sounds awesome with the two vocals going at the same time because they're not ultra-tight. They're a little bit loose with each other, giving you a different kind of texture. This also works well with the approach to the song. The song is pop-rock, as I mentioned before, but it also borders on alternative rock.
There is certainly a bit of heaviness to it, even though the chords and riffs have a bit of brightness or color to them.
A lot about this track puts you in the moment with the song. She sings with a lot of heart, so things get a little intense, in a good way, but the whole thing also feels almost like watching a live performance.
I think this has a lot to do with the energy level of a track like this. This song has a great energy to it, and that's very infectious.
This is one of those songs that you listen to on a record and immediately want to go see the artist perform live, in person.
Again, this single in particular, portrays a great sonic wall of guitars and because of that, the edginess shines through to really have an amazing presence.
You can also hear plenty of pop overtones on this one. It's got a bit of a bopping rhythm, and there's a great lead guitar riff that happens in the middle of the track that feels sort of spirited, in a sense.
It really adds to the aesthetic of the track.
The second single release is called "Bellerophon", which comes through a little differently because it feels a bit more punk rock.
This one sort of thrashes out a little bit more and comes in a little harder than the first.
I definitely enjoyed this because her vocal approach is also a bit more robust on this and is, for the most part, one single vocal as opposed to being double-tracked.
All of this adds to a more raw energy and tone, which is very driving and still has those pop elements in its underbelly.
Although this one has a bit more of a punk rock feel, the brightness is still there, the color is still there, and she still has such a brilliantly vivacious presence and approach to her vocal performance.
I certainly dig how each of these tracks is very catchy, but in a different way.
It also showcases how she has a little bit of diversity in the way that she writes her songs. You can hear a slew of influences just between these two songs alone
Along with all this, again, she gives off a lot of personality. With sounds like this one, she's belting out, and she still has passion in her approach, but she's also being very honest in her storytelling.
This track lets you follow along with her story a little bit closer, and I'm not sure if that's because she's got a single vocal track on it or not. I think it's more because the lyrics tell a story in a linear perspective.
You can follow along with that story really easily, and that has a different way of pulling you in.
Both of these are vibrant and have great rock overtones that can seamlessly blend the color with the edginess, the pop with the alternative, and the light with the dark.
She's very unique at being able to create her own aesthetic yet stay somewhat familiar at the same time.
These two songs alone showcase a lot about this artist.
Most importantly, she's unafraid. It feels like she uses the songs to get things off her chest and tell those stories.
Both of them feel like they might have even been cathartic for the artist to write and release.
They're easy to connect with, and they definitely give some huge guitar presents rivaled by those vivacious and melodically driving and somewhat intense vocals.
I would definitely dive into both of these now and see how they affect you
Upon listening to these tracks, I took a bit of a deep dive into her back catalog and found some amazing albums and singles leading up to these. If you dig both of these tracks, I would definitely check out some of her previous releases because they're outstanding.
This is also fun because you can hear a bit of her evolution and songwriting from the beginning until now.
There's an album called A Miss/ A Masterpiece from 2022 that's so good.
Either way, check these out and remember where you heard it first.
