A Lush and Cinematic Rock Single From TheNightCry

A fresh single release from TheNightCry delivers a cinematic approach to alternative rock while bringing in some classic '90s undertones at the same time, driving presence, and a near-perfect blend of storytelling, edginess, and a little bit of vast undertone.

One of the things I love most about "The Cut" is that it feels like it came from some real place. The lyrics feel completely authentic, and it feels totally like the singer is actually talking about someone in particular. It's clear that he's pulling from somewhere in his own life, and it works great here because it puts you into the story a little bit deeper.

The song gives you layers of guitars along with a beat that sort of bops along. I like this because there are these keys that give a faster-paced rhythm in between the drum beats, see you have these layers of rhythms as well that both play a part in the flow and drive of the track, as a whole.

This band most certainly pays a lot of attention to arrangement. The way the song is formulated is brilliant, giving you these great post-choruses that flow back into the verses, and it's pretty cool because it gives the song a certain kind of shape that stands a little bit outside the box, but still gives you an amazing formula to follow.

The tones of the guitars are another element that was definitely paid much attention to, and this is important as well, simply because the full track delivers a very particular kind of aesthetic. As I mentioned earlier, it's definitely cinematic, which is something I loved about it, but it also tells this story that you can follow along with.

The lyrics can be a little bit metaphoric, but you get the point. By the time you get to the second verse, the guitars hit a little bit harder, everything is built up a little bit more, and the intensity level rises.

This was an awesome way to build the song in general. The vocals follow suit with the rise and intensity and louder volumes of the guitars; everything gets hit a little bit harder, and you start to feel that heat.

During the chorus, you have an awesome guitar setup. One guitar does open chords in a little bit more of a heavier tone, while another guitar is more clean, performing arpeggiated chords plucked one note at a time, and delivering with it a great musical guitar hook.

This is really important to bring up because it's something that is missing from a lot of kinds of rock music these days.

There's always a great chorus if a song is done right, but a lot of rock musical hooks.

The fact that this band pulled off a great guitar hook that's not over the top, but flows with the chorus itself, is brilliant.

It thickens everything up and gives the song a little bit more depth.

To me, the track is already all about layers. The way the guitars are layered, the way the vocals come together and bring in harmonies at certain sections, and how the whole thing creates an atmosphere that you just sort of dive right into.

I'm definitely a big fan of songs like this because they do create that aesthetic and atmosphere. It's kind of like a little bit of an escape.

The cinematic element comes from the fact that there is almost always that spacious underbelly the entire time. That vastness is always lurking just beneath the surface, giving things a little bit of a distant feeling.

It makes the song feel bigger.

Almost everything about this track is like a hook. Even the verses have really memorable melodies coming from those vocals, along with some great guitar work.

You can hear a little bit of edginess coming from the bass guitar, and different sections of the song guitar-wise as well, so they're not afraid to get heavy when they want to.

Even when they do get heavy, the whole thing is very melodically driving. It focuses more on melodic \hooks and progression so that you get these things stuck in your brain.

This definitely works because that chorus is easily bouncing around in your head for hours after the song has ended. The only way to satiate that is to go and listen to it again.

"The Cut" seems like it's about a significant other of some kind or someone that you're after. It feels like a track that's about a person you do anything for, even though they don't really treat you right. You keep coming back, even after they've cut you out multiple times.

Now, this is just how I interpreted the song. Others may take it a little differently, but for me, to send them it was pretty loud and clear.

The single is here, of course, just in time for Valentine's Day, so this does all make perfect sense.

I would definitely not miss this one because they're pretty honest lyrically, very straightforward, there's some emotion behind the vocal performances, those layers of guitars just bring amazing textures and depth to the soundscape, and this was super memorable through and through.

Definitely check this one out as soon as you can, and don't forget where you heard it first.
