A brand new single from Yassin & Sean Terrio certainly brings an amazing blend of pop and funk, with a full-bodied set of instrumentation including horns, guitars, pianos, and more.
This track is a feel-good, high-spirited, colorful piece of work that comes through with a vivacious energy that becomes incredibly infectious, right from the get-go.
Once again, this duo is able to bring together all kinds of different elements to create something that has a big, robust feel to it. It's insanely danceable, very addictive, and you can kind of feel how it's whimsical and lighthearted.
This is not a very serious kind of song. It's meant for you to have fun listening to.
These guys are masters at creating lush songs with hooks that bop around in your brain pretty much forever.
This track exemplifies how they're able to put soul and heart into a song, but still have it be fun, and a bit carefree, not taking itself too seriously, and being able to give you something that we can move your body to.
"Animal" starts right off giving you a deep rooted groove, landing you right in the pocket of it all.
The percussion is outstanding and is definitely the driving force, but it adds this amazing liveliness to the single as well.
The piano is the root instrument of the single, and what the song is sort of based around. It was probably written on piano in the first place.
But of course, it really grows and branches out from there.
There are layers of keys and some guitars in there that really kind of create this amazing texture and tonal warmth that reels you into the track.
Once it hits that core is, you have additional instruments like organs that really kick in and fill any kind of space that it might have had before. However, it doesn't really need it because the vocals are so boisterous and sort of in your face, but again, in a very pop-coated way, even though they deliver loads of soul.
This was one of the best combinations of pop and soul that I've heard in a very long time, which just goes to show you how these guys can write songs in different styles.
We're no strangers to YASSIN & Sean Terrio, and I can definitely tell you that they have a wide range of how they write their songs, but always have those two elements firmly intact.
A lot of the time there's plenty of heart, loads of character, which this song boasts as well, and it always holds that pop-sensibility up high.
This track, in particular, is one that you can't help but move to.
If you're in the car listening to this, you will certainly be shaking your butt in your seat. If you're at home, then move the couch back and be ready to dance around the living room because this is definitely a jam of jams.
The brightness of this single is outstanding and again, it's quite addictive because you feel that energy and your bones when you listen to the song.
Not only that, but when you listen to the song, you can hear how much fun these guys are having even recording it.
They're in their zone and having an absolute blast, which is shining through on the recording itself.
This is another aspect of the duo that always comes through: thriving. Their energy level feels alive.
It makes you want to see them perform songs like this live, right in your face. If they can capture that kind of energy and aesthetic so well on record, then seeing them live must be awesome.
This was an absolute banger and felt great to listen to nice and loud, which is something I suggest for you when you check it out as well.
Don't listen to this at a low volume. It's meant to be cranked up so that you can feel those good vibes and dance along.
This is kind of a hands in the air sing along type of track as well. It only takes one course for you to be able to sing along to it the next time around.

Where did this song come from and what is it about?
Hello! Yassin here! This song started as a little chord progression I had come up with, that we called “Happy Smells Like Teen Spirit” A melody showed up very soon after, and by the time I had shown it to Sean we had a lot of “silly” lyrics in place to fill the melody until we finished the song. Turns out we couldn’t beat the nonsense lyrics they just ended up feeling the best. We were stuck on a chorus for a while and I kept saying to Sean “I feel like we need to call this person an animal, not that, but some other lyric that says that” Sean belted out the simplest of lyrics, we laughed and knew ok we have a bop on our hands.
Did you guys work with an outside producer on this song, or was this all you?
This one was all us! Musically it feels like home to us, with all the live instrumentation and vintage feel. In a way this really feels the most like “our sound” It had been a while since we made something that felt like this tune, so we are STOKED.
Where did you record this?
In a few different studios around Toronto, plus our engineers home studio. We were actually at our engineers Kevin Dietz’ place to demo out this ballad which is the last song on our album…We finished that pretty quickly, and I brought up this one at the end of that session, asking if everyone had another hour to try it out. That hour was indeed available, and we all got very excited about the track as we started laying it down…Still haven’t finished that ballad actually, this one took priority!
Do you write songs together in sessions, or does one of you bring ideas to the other first? How does it work for you?
Both! A lot of the time either Sean or I have half or a full idea that we bring to each other to flesh out. We’re currently in the busiest time of year for us, so getting together with the intention to just write songs is tough, but we usually do a lot of that at the start of the year when touring slows down!
Are you guys doing any new shows in support of this release?
YES! Actually the day this song comes out, we’re playing one of the biggest festivals in Canada Boots & Hearts! We can’t wait!
Are you working on any new music right now?
Technically, we’re just wrapping up the recording of our new music and trying to release the album before the years done! October is the goal! Then we’ll start writing new stuff right after!
Do you enjoy the writing and recording process as much as live performing?
Writing and recording were my original dream. I Absolutely love spending 14 hours in a studio making sounds. BUT, Since playing live became such a big part of what we do, I must say in the biggest surprise to me, I love it more than anything. On stage, I feel like the most me I can be.
What can people expect from this single?
A FUN time. This song is a quintessential YST jam. For those fans who’ve been following since day 1, you will not be disappointed. It grooves, it bops, and it has our favourite break down in a song ever.
You have a lyric video approaching correct? Do you guys work on that yourselves or do you have someone who shoots and edits with you?
Correct! Our brother Nathan Peters shoots and edits the vids with us. He’s a core member of the YST Project and has been working with me for even longer than Sean and I have been making music together.
You have both been at this for a while! Any advice for upcoming artists out there?
Keep going no matter what. That’s what I keep telling myself, and it still gets me out of bed when facing the nonsense of the music biz. Believe in what you’re doing, don’t get distracted by others, and trust the music.
