A fresh single release from Khadi Lee manages to deliver a lot of truth, honesty, and personality along with incredibly smooth and soothing vocal approaches in the form of a heavy-handed R&B single that boasts such a vast and spacious undertone and atmosphere that you can't turn away from it.
One of my favorite aspects of "So High" is that he's really giving a piece of himself throughout this track. It feels vulnerable, yes, but also unafraid at the same time. I dig that because I think it takes a lot to put yourself out there in the way that he does it on this track.
The beat has amazing production, and is silky just like his vocals. The whole track showcases a real love for the craft of not just singing, but also producing and writing songs that have impact, and that obviously came from someplace authentic.
Listening to this one single alone shows me that Khadi is the type of artist to create music with fewer boundaries than whatever you may be used to.
There are no walls built around his songs, and you can tell because of the lyrics. He lets a lot of inner thought come spilling out for all to soak in, and that's part of the brilliance of it all, but it's also part of why the whole thing boasts so much character.
In the end, I feel like it's that character you end up getting attached to the most.
I interpreted the song as almost like a love letter of sorts. It's about how another person brings him up. It makes him better, and without that person, he feels a little bit less than.
The way that comes through is passionate. The soul in his performance is totally undeniable, and it's also quite addictive.
He's got this sort of rich and warm tone to his vocal in general, and that is part of what wraps itself around you and keeps you right where it wants to.
There are all kinds of cool production going on throughout this track, including subtle synthesizers and keys, pianos, a beat that builds perfectly, and the whole thing really breeds a bit of a cinematic backbone, to me.
I like that the whole thing feels kind of intense at times. Again, it's super smooth and has a rich feel to it, but it is kind of intense because it feels emotional.
This is also part of the authenticity factor. It came from some real place, and you just sense that when you listen to the song.
Some additional keys and synthesizers start bringing the song to a different place with a more spacious and vast undertone, adding more layers of texture and depth to the song, all the while, whose vocals still pour out emotion the entire time.
Again, this was unafraid, and that's one of my favorite aspects about it.
As the song unfolds, you start getting more hints at his actual vocal ability and range. Believe me, right from the start, you get a feel for that soul in his performance, but as the song goes on, you start hearing these different high notes that he hits, inventing vocal riffs, and just going off on these small tangents that are melodically driven and still somehow oozing with that soulful performance through and through.
I definitely got sucked into this track. It's something that hit me kind of hard, but I really enjoyed that factor a lot.
You can tell there's a lot of attention to detail that went into the production, and the mix of the track, which is not something I talk about all the time, but here it's really important because the track is meant to have that depth and those layers.
The mix of a song is a huge part of how it feels in the end, and I'm sure that Khadi had a huge hand in how he wanted the aesthetic of the song to come through.
This was pretty impactful and certainly powerful, so I can tell that this artist is someone who puts a lot into what he's creating and again, doesn't really build walls around it either. He is freeing himself for this music, its expression, and its passion.
When you listen to this song, you can tell it's a pure passion project, and he's doing it so that he can get things off his chest.
Having said that, in terms of having an amazing R&B feel, this is where it's at. It's very radio-friendly, and any fan of the genre is going to fall in love with this track right away.
Now, as far as I can tell, this is just a glimpse of an upcoming full album release set for next month. I definitely cannot wait to hear this because I can't imagine how many other songs are going to be on it and how much deeper this record is going to go in terms of giving off all that soul and that rich tonality.
Once you hear the song, you'll understand exactly what I mean because it's super infectious.
He's got a very unique tone to his voice, and I think that's quite beautiful.
So, take a deep dive into this track right now and listen to it with headphones on because it's one of the best ways to soak it in, and look out for the upcoming record set for March.
Remember where you heard it first.
