REXEN returns with a very unique and almost ceremonial feeling new single that delves into an almost tribal tonality and with that, gives vast cinematic aesthetics that are both intriguing, slightly haunting, and beautifully executed.
"Hoik Up" features an array of instrumentation that really helps it build, thrive in certain elements of intensity, and create this unique soundscape and atmosphere that surrounds you quickly.
This is a song that you sort of escaped into. Once you're there, you can't really leave.
The whole thing is beautifully constructed. Throughout the song you have amazing textural layers that come in and out including some amazing violins that help push a little bit more of that cinematic and almost eerie underbelly, but the song is also done with singer Mette Lindberg who performs a chorus and also adds these floating and spacious background vocals to the track, pushing that distance feeling a bit further, giving it an additional layer of that depth, and letting you sort of swim through those layers.
She has a unique tone and brings the song to life with a very particular kind of brightness.
REXEN performs what is close to a poetic spoken word kind of approach, and the whole thing is a bit uplifting. It's a song that kind of focuses on pushing through and rising up.
You can hear the spirited sentiment throughout the song itself, and it's very intriguing.
The percussion element of the song is pretty much everything. It pushes the song forward and helps really give it that sort of tribal or ritualistic sensation, but there's also this bass line throughout the track that deepens the pockets of the whole thing.
Because all these elements are put together beautifully, the song has that natural flow to it. It does have a kind of edgy but ethereal feeling overtone at times, again, certain elements of it feel cinematic or haunting because of the strings and some of the backing vocals, but the song has a bright light to it.
It's really a song that's about strength, moving forward, and taking hold of things.
This is one of the more outside-the-box and unique tracks that I've heard from the artist, and I feel like the team-up with Mette was nearly a match made in heaven.
This is mainly because they're able to flow with each other so well. They each have a part to play in the song, and neither one of them takes main focus. They both share that element, so that the message of the song comes through, but so does the lusciousness, and that's what makes the song work so well.
It's all very beautifully done and being someone who's hurt plenty of releases from REXEN, I can say that the artist is always stepping outside the boundaries of what he last did.
This is an artist who takes a different direction, sometimes in bigger ways, sometimes slighter, but either way, he's experimental; he doesn't create music or songs with filters on them or walls built around them.
This is a freeing song, and once you're halfway through, you feel like you're in a waking dream.
This is one of my favorite elements about the entire thing. It sort of drifts, in a way.
It feels like it's not even real. It's fun to experience those kinds of Sensations when you're listening to music, and I suggest listening to this one with headphones cuz it's one of the best ways to be able to take all of those elements in properly.
The track is released right alongside the last two, "I Can See You", and "Hollywood", which both portray several influences and give off more of that theatrical approach, but with a sort of light-hearted folk undertone at times.
The songs always have beautiful hooks and instrumentation that are completely naturally performed. Everything is so warm and welcoming in the strangest of ways.
I would definitely suggest listening to all three of these songs. They each have something a little bit different to offer, and you can see more of what I mean by listening to all three. You'll be able to get a better grasp on the different directions he can branch off into and how he is unafraid to take different approaches musically.
Definitely have a listen to this record as soon as you can and see how it affects you. Remember where you heard this first.
