An Introspective Piece of Music from Might Joe Belson

A beautiful new piece of work from Mighty Joe Belson comes through as an emotionally bound and slightly cinematic piece of music that feels inspired by something impactful.

The song is a piano piece that has a wonderful way of sending you adrift with it. The soundscape builds a beautifully bountiful atmosphere, performed with a delicate approach for soft soundscapes; this track wraps itself around you quite quickly.

It's a piece of music that feels like it came from someplace authentic. It feels like a chapter in the artist's life in some way.

The performance is beautifully done with such attention to dynamics, balance, and still keeping the emotion intact.

This is clearly a piece of music that has its own meaning for Might Joe Belson, and before we get into that, it's important to understand that when we hear pieces of music like this one, we all interpret it a little bit differently.

For me, this track sent memories reeling through my head, and it was a wonderful and slightly intense experience.

That's part of the beauty of music like this. It sets a certain kind of mood. This piece has an amazing balance of light and dark to it. The melodies, notes, and emotions that go with them fluctuate, and you can quickly tell there's a lot of attention paid to the arrangement and how the track would unfold as a whole.

There's a sense of spirituality that comes to mind when you hear the song. It brings a calmness that is easy to get engulfed by. It feels amazing to do exactly that. Getting swallowed up by a song like this can be an almost transcendent experience.

This is because although the mood and emotion are there in the performance and the writing, our minds will go wherever they please. It's an open-ended experience and again, will be different for each listener.

All in all, "The Process Of Individuation," will make you feel something. That is the importance.

In a way, it's introspective, somewhat vulnerable, and composed and performed with a certain kind of elegance that gives it something that seems almost like a shimmer.

Taking in this song is refreshing.

I think that there are hints of existentialism attached to it, but again it depends on who's hearing it.

Some might focus a little bit more on the southern aspects of the melodies and notes, while others might focus more on the brighter sections and changes.

This was a wonderfully woven piece of work from Belson, who composed and mixed the single.

The composer has experience working with all kinds of genres, from rock to jazz, chamber music, and, of course, instrumental pieces like this one.

These are the kinds of pieces that speak to people the most because they become attached to them. When you listen to the song, you feel like it was written just for you, even though you know it wasn't.

That speaks volumes, in my opinion.

In that sense, it's an unafraid piece of work. And the sheer fact that each person who listens to it will take it in in a particular way different from the last is intense

The filmic and cinematic backbone will be pretty evident for a lot of people; this is just because it's an emotional piece that would serve well in a film.

That just goes with the territory.

I would suggest listening to this track with headphones on so you can really soak it in and sit with it. It is amazing to swim through this piece of work and really let it affect you.

Of course, upon listening to it, I absolutely wanted to know what actually inspired it, so I had to sit down with Mighty Joe Belson to find out.

Read through our interview with the artist and composer while you listen to this piece of work.

Remember where you heard it first.

Where did this record come from and what was it about?

-This song came from a late night session at the piano. It was one of those things that you just play what you hear in your head and follow without any sort of pre-conceived idea. I had been reading a book about Carl Jung philosophy and I liked the concept of Individuation, or discovering and coming to terms with the unconscious self. So to mimic the experience of diving deeper into your head I decided to take the basic chords and melody and then add layer after layer.

I am hearing a few different styles on this release. Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

-I'm sort of a metalhead who listens to a lot of jazz, classical, and ambient. This particular cut was influenced by artists like Max Richter, Trent Reznor, Kara Lis-Coverdale, and Nils Frahm. People who experiment with adding dissonance to otherwise beautiful piano music.

Are you performing live right now?

-I have plans to perform my stuff soon, but in the meantime I work as a bassist around the Bay Area in California.

How did this all start for you as a band?

-This song started much same way as my interest in music. I must have been about seven or eight years old when I got a hold of some tone bells and started playing around and making sounds I liked. Never really stopped.

Did you work with a producer on this album, or was this all you?

-This was all me at home in my studio. I did the mix myself, but worked with Jessica Thompson for the mastering.

What's next for you? Working on more new releases?

-I've been working for while on a solo bass record. It will be full of lyrical songs played with a bow on my upright bass. Honestly it's about the hardest thing I've ever done as a musician, but it's gonna be pretty cool and unique. And after that, a new Doodle Cats jazz record will be on the way in 2027. What kind of advice would you give to other up and coming bands or artists trying to get heard?

-Collaborate with others. Don't buy too much into social media - get out there and play live in people's faces!

What would you say people can expect to hear on this record?

-The sound of a mind unfolding upon itself, building tension and releasing it to find that maybe the answer was all there at the beginning.

Before we go, what would you want to express to fans of the music?

-Listen to your dreams, and follow them as best you can - that's how the Process begins.
