Hanne Lynge just released a full album that is comprised of some very warm sets of tonalities and crosses elements of Americana, country, folk, and even adult contemporary, all in one album that showcases a lot of her sense of persona, and this is one very full-bodied and inviting album.
The Do It album kicks off with the track called "Insane", which comes right in with a sort of classic country guitar tone and riff, along with Stomps and claps to give it its rhythm and beat. This is an aspect I absolutely love because everything just feels so natural that way.
The stomps and claps give this track a bit of gusto, and the guitars give it that southern-kissed approach, which all make for an amazing way to bring the record into play simply because you're starting to get a feel for what you may expect.
As the track opens up further, you start getting banjo and more instrumentation, so the whole thing actually builds, and this gives you a great example of how Hanne writes her songs.
This album has a lot of tracks that put you in the moment with the songs themselves. It sometimes feels almost like a live performance that you're watching, and this is one of the reasons that I suggest listening to the entire record from start to finish as opposed to just a few songs here and there.
There's a lot more going on than you might expect on the entire record, so diving into it headfirst is the best way to go.
One of the things about Hanne is the simple fact that she's an amazing storyteller. She tells her stories from personal perspectives a lot of the time, but she's also able to be somewhat descriptive, while remaining heartfelt and genuine. You can paint certain pictures in your head as tracks unfold, and that's kind of a beautiful thing.
As I mentioned earlier, this record is pretty eclectic. You do have a lot of the Southern tone, country or Americana-influenced instrumentation and songwriting approaches, but there's also that more contemporary feel as well.
Songs like "Why Did I Let You Go" showcase exactly that. A beautiful piano performance and a very passionate vocal approach that really lends more of a hand to a contemporary feel, while still giving these slight hints of Southern undertones, but the whole thing has a heavy-handed emotional pull.
This is another thing you hear throughout the record pretty often. Songs can be a little emotional at times because she's pulling from life experience.
When you listen to the full album, it feels almost like these are chapters in the artist's life, and that's another reason to go from start to finish. It's almost like reading a book. You wouldn't skip chapters in a book. I wouldn't skip songs on this record.
It's songs like this one that really pull you in. I love the country and Americana style tracks, but songs like this feel cinematic or even theatrical in a sense.
A lot of the record is kind of humanizing, and I like that.
One of my favorites on the record is the title track, "Do It", which really gives off a spirited feel and aesthetic.
The record has a lot of moments of uplifting in between the storytelling, the honesty, and everything else. This is important because she's showing you different sides of her personality and where she's coming from.
This track, to me, is a perfect blend of the Americana and the contemporary because it features a lot of piano and acoustic guitar, along with a very memorable chorus that repeats itself and sort of embeds into your brain.
This one still feels like it's definitely coming from some real place. There's a lot of authenticity on this record, and that's one of the reasons it's so infectious.
The album isn't without its experimental side as well. She is again a pretty eclectic songwriter, and this full record really gives you a lot of those diverse songwriting approaches.
"Follow Your Heart" is an example of a song that gives you a bit of a pop overtone. It's got a sort of '90s kind of beat. Her vocals are a little bit different performance-wise. She's got a smoother, silky kind of tone to her singing.
I love that because it feels like she's getting into character for the different songs.
There's certainly some vulnerability going on throughout the record, which is always important, but it definitely gives you a lot to drink in.
This record was quite a brilliant release that, aside from showcasing her different songwriting styles and performances, gives you pieces of the artist herself.
I think we need more of that in music these days.
Again, listen to this full record because it's more than worth it, and remember where you heard it first.
