A fresh new single from Andrew Swift delivers a classic country vibe with a massively addictive chorus and a lot of that Southern Soul and warmth that you look for from a track of this nature.
"Get Lost" is about exactly that. Instead of going out to the clubs, hitting the dance floors, and doing the same old thing, the song brings back the idea of just walking around and getting lost.
It sounds silly at first, but if you think about it, this is the kind of stuff we used to do when we were kids. We used to just wander around and get lost, and that's how we spent our day.
Why can't we go back to that? I'm sure it would feel great to just roam about, get lost, and be in our own heads as we soaked in the sights and sounds of whatever was surrounding us.
I love the sentiment behind this track, and the delivery is outstanding. The vocals are robust but still colorful and super welcoming.
It's also got all the sort of instrumentation that you would want from a real deal country song, from classic guitars to banjos and more, hinting at this roots undertone.
You can tell there's a slew of influences that are attributed to a song and an artist like this, from classic country in Americana to Blues, Soul, and more.
Andrew was able to bring these elements together for his single, and I think that this one stands tall and speaks volumes for the artist simply because that course sticks with you for hours after the song has ended.
It's the kind of course that just bounces around in your head, and the only way to satiate that is to go and listen to it again.
The song has a vivacious energy and feels alive, but also brings outstanding guitar work to the table. There's some great solo work here, and every element of the performance, from the instruments to the vocals, has this soul attached to it.
You can tell this was just a blast for everyone to sit down and track, and the arrangement and songwriting of the entire thing has a lot of attention to detail because the way it unfolds is nearly perfect.
This track has a great forward-moving flow and hits a lot of the elements of true Country that you would want.
It's a swinging good time, packed with personality and this semi-pop overcoat that lets it come through catchy while still feeling like genuine country. Kicking up dirt roads, being out in nature, country music is a heavy-handed element in this track, so that aesthetic really comes through strongly.
After listening to this track, I definitely would love to see Andrew perform this song and others live because he captures such a great energy and feel on this one.
It is an absolutely spirited and vibrant single that feels like a summer getaway in the country. The song feels good to listen to.
Andrew has already made quite a name for himself with three Australian Recording Industry Association number one records and three Golden Guitar Awards, including Male Artist of the Year in 2023.
Once you listen to this track, you'll completely understand why.
This is the kind of song you feel like you've heard on the radio already.
With the release of such a wonderfully put-together and performed track, we got to talk with Andrew Swift about the song and what might be coming up next for him.
Here's what happened.
Buzz Slayers: Hey Andrew! Let's talk about "Get Lost";! This was an honest, spirited, and stomping country single. Where did this track come from?
A) A good friend and writing buddy of mine actually wrote this one. Blake Dantier is his name, we were writing a couple of songs for my next record together and I
casually mentioned that if he had any songs kicking around that he thought might be a good fit, that I’d be keen to have a look. He sent over a few songs and I felt connected to ‘Get Lost’ the moment I heard it. I’ve never been a big fan of cities, I love seeing rural and remote areas, and I especially love seeing new places, and the song is all about getting out of town, out of the world you know and getting lost somewhere new.
Buzz Slayers: I'm hearing some classic country in this song! Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
A) I was a real late comer to country music, I grew up in an area where country
music wasn’t considered cool, mind you, what I was listening to back then probably wasn’t considered cool anyway. I was right into Van Morrison, Cat Stevens and bands like Tonic and the Goo Goo Dolls. I eventually found my feet in country music and was immediately drawn to artists like Chris Stapleton, especially when he was with Steeldrivers, Jason Isbell, Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson. I did spend some time playing in a country party band though, so I guess I cut my country teeth on the likes of Big & Rich, Brooks & Dunn and Miranda Lambert.
Buzz Slayers: When did this all start for you as an artist? When did you fall in love with music?
A) I’ve always loved music but I think that I really connected with it when I picked up a guitar on a school camp at the age of 16. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was
going through depression. Music gave me goals to work towards and a way to
express myself when I felt that I couldn’t. I’ve loved it ever since, and honestly feel
like I’m in debt for what it did for me.
Buzz Slayers: Are you performing live right now?
A) I’m having a little break from performing at the moment as my girlfriend and I just welcomed our first child into the world, so I’m taking a little time to be at home before getting back on the road a little later in the year.
Buzz Slayers: Did you record this in a home studio setup, or did you go to a big studio for this?
A) Neither really, but also, kind of both. I recorded with my producer, Matt Fell, he
used to be in a big studio in Sydney, but relocated to a remote spot in Tasmania, so we use all the equipment we’d use in a big studio, but we work in a home studio environment.
Buzz Slayers: Now that this is out, what's next for you as an artist?
A) The plan is to have another single out in a couple of months before releasing my 4th studio album in the second half of the year when I get back on the road to tour and promote it properly. I think I should squeeze in a little trip to Canada before then too though.
Buzz Slayers: Who's in your headphones right now?
A) This week I’ve pretty much been listening to nothing but the new records from
Hailey Whitters (Corn Queen) and The Steeldrivers (Outrun).
Buzz Slayers: This was a pretty big song! Was it a big undertaking? How long did it take to finish this?
A) This one might’ve been the quickest turnaround from recording to release of a
song for me. I picked it up in February, recorded it at the start of March and
released it in May.
I had a week in the studio recording it along with 4 other songs, when I was
chatting to my label about the next potential single, they were pretty keen to hear
what we were working on that week, so I sent them a pretty raw, unfinished
version and they immediately came back stating they wanted ‘Get Lost’ to be the
next release.
Buzz Slayers: What would you tell people they can expect on this release?
A) It’s a fun song, definitely a road trip with the windows down kinda song. It’s an ear worm though, be prepared for it to be stuck in your head for a while.
Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?
A) Thank you for being along for the ride. I have a whole lot more new music to share with you all this year, and I’m pretty excited about it, but if you’ve just discovered me, there’s three albums full of my songs and stories that you can dig into in the meantime.
