An Interview With The NightCry

A new single release from The NightCry delivers a classic post-punk aesthetic with all the bells and whistles attached that you could possibly want from the genre giving everything this genuine tonality and the ability to wrap itself around you and keep you right where it wants to.

"Find Hers Keep Hers" boasts that nearly perfect atmosphere making things slightly edgy with even a gothic undertone at times but still colorful enough to be catchy with that pop theme lurking just beneath the surface and this is all something that you really get attached to quite quickly.

The track itself is actually very danceable and gives some solid hooks but it's the tone of the guitars in the keys that really round out the soundscape for this track and make it as lush as it actually is.

The track definitely has some layers that can be peeled back here especially lyrically but in terms of the music it's very straightforward and gives you everything you want with a few surprises around the corners which is actually very refreshing.

I think the thing that really locks you into the song is the character.

This band itself, especially vocally, has a ton of character and persona that really have a way of grabbing at you and that is infectious and begins right from the start of the song.

The band has a great sort of almost live feel to them like the players are feeding off of each other's energies the entire time and maybe the track was actually recorded live on the floor, I'm not really sure of course, but either way it really does make you want to see them live.

This is also one of the reasons why the music video that accompanies a single is so good.

You get some great little bits and storyline here and there but you also get to see the band in a live setting and you get a sense of their presence which is something that hits really well.

One of the other things I really like about this track is that it kind of takes you to this other place and it's got this sort of theatrical feel to it at times.

You can clearly tell that this is done by a group of musicians that have a pure love for their craft as well as performing and it all comes together with a great sort of energy and vibrancy to it.

You can check this out in a lot of different places but I would definitely strongly suggest watching the video to do so because it's one of the best ways to soak the song in and get a vibe for the band's actual humor as well.

There is that whimsical element that's a lot more evident in the video than in just the song by itself so watching the music videos adds a whole other layer to things plus it's a lot of fun.

With the release of such a well-woven single we wanted to have a sit down with The NightCry to find out where this actually came from and what might be coming up next for the band.

Here's what happened.

Buzz Slayers: Okay, let's start with "Find Hers, Keep Hers"! This track had a classic feel to it with the synths and boasted a post-punk undertone! How did this release come about?

Thank you! That is quite the compliment! We wanted to write a song about the balance and transformation between feelings of love and infatuation. Musically, we wanted to write a synth-rock song that would be a hit at a vampire dance party. Buzz Slayers: How did this all start for you as a band?

Robert Palmer's music video for "Addicted to Love" started it all! Vincent, Shana, and I have all known each other through the music scene for years, so we took the inspiration and ran with it. We met Sarah through the Seattle scene and Hannah across a table at a party where she overheard us talking about our search for a keyboard player. The rest is history. Buzz Slayers: What kind of things really inspire songs for you?

We are really inspired by seeing people show up authentically, as themselves. We also love to use exciting as well as mundane life events as an impetus for songs. And of course, let's not forget fashion. Buzz Slayers: This release has some great approaches to it! Can you give us some of your biggest influences musically?

Thank you! We are very much into implementing influence from bands like Depeche Mode, The Cult, and David Bowie. On a personal level, we all come from a diverse background of music and that really shines through in our music, giving our songs that unique sound of 1987 meeting 2023 in a dark, rainy alley. Buzz Slayers: What are you doing when you're NOT working on music?

We are always working on The NightCry! As a self-managed band, we definitely stay busy outside of the music process itself. We are constantly working on booking shows, creating the next music video concept, coming up with ideas for photoshoots, and so on. We also spend a significant amount of time on the not-so-fun stuff like legal contracts and taxes. We also make it a priority to go out and see local bands. Buzz Slayers: Who's in all your headphones right now?

Andreka- k.flay, Wanz Vincent- DESTRYUR, Creux Lies Shana- Velvet Revolver, ACTORS Sarah- Urban Heat, Night Rider Hannah- Bad Omens, Caskets Buzz Slayers: Are you all doing any live performances right now?

We just finished our last show of the year in October, which was truly amazing. There's nothing better than an awesome venue packed with great people. We will be getting back into the live-show circuit in 2024 with shows (both electric and acoustic), tours, and festivals. Buzz Slayers: Do you record these at a big studio or do you have a home studio set-up?

This song was recorded in our home studio and mixed/mastered by Brian Skeel.

Buzz Slayers: What can your fans expect from you in the near future?

2024 is going to be an exciting year for The NightCry. We are currently working on our debut album, have another single on the way, a music video in production, and shows lined up. Also, we will be doing the random, impromptu surprises that we love so much. Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?

We really do have the best fans. I know that every artist says that, but we actually do! Thank you for being so supportive and so amazing. We look forward to continuing to connect with you on our journey.
