A fresh single release from Thom Chapman pulls together this almost ambient atmosphere and combines it with elements of psychedelic and alternative rock to breed something that has a sort of natural and forward-moving flow, but also has a really colorful kind of vibrancy, while still balancing some edginess in there as well
You can absolutely hear plenty of experimental tonalities flowing through this track. There are some amazing percussion sections, intensities that come in waves, and a lot of depth and layers that combine textures so that you have something to chew on.
As the song unfolds, you have loads of other instrumentation that come into play and brighten things up even more. One of the things that hits me hardest about this track are the actual textural and tonal layers that come together because those are what really create the atmosphere that's so unique.
It is flavorful and has a lot of charisma.
I feel like this is a really important aspect simply because the artist is singing a song about having drive, but also wanting to lie low.
The way I interpreted the track was along those lines. It's about how you have to have the drive to move forward, progress, have your goals set, and so forth. But it's also about just wanting to be lazy as well.
I feel like it's a balance between those two things, and that sentiment is something that a lot of us can understand and relate to.
It's a very common vibe these days, and I think it makes perfect sense for someone to understand that they need to drive to get somewhere they want to be, but can also be perfectly content where they're at.
Now, this is how I interpreted the song. Others may take it in a little differently, but for me, the sentiment was pretty loud and clear, and I enjoyed it.
Some people would consider this to be more art rock than anything else. It does have that aesthetic going on, and it breeds the psych rock in with that pretty perfectly, but it also again has a little bit of an edginess. The guitar tones are really perfected but not over the top.
Everything is really well dynamically balanced, and I feel like there was a lot of thought that went into the final mix and how the entire soundscape was constructed.
For example, sometimes there are heavier guitar parts while the vocals have a smooth, almost Beach Boys-style flow to them.
I love that combination too. I didn't expect it, but it happened so naturally that it just feels good to listen to.
There are plenty of other sections where the guitars are clean, playing arpeggiated chords, giving more hugs, and really bringing in that pop sensibility.
This is another important aspect of the track. It is very pop-coated. As I mentioned earlier, it's got a lot of color to it, and that element of pop is never left behind.
It's fully danceable and really bends genres seamlessly. Indie rock, indie-pop, a little alternative, dream pop, and plenty more are all rolled into this single, and the vocal performance is really cool because it leans towards an indie style approach, but also has some classic feels.
Great harmonies are performed throughout the track on and off, and I feel like the vocals are almost used like instruments themselves through half of the song.
The drumming is never in one place. It's never just in the pocket, but instead as a complete liveliness and almost freeing sensation to the song.
I feel like the drum performance here is a huge key to how the song flows the way it does.
The vocals are very dreamy. They have a sort of silky smoothness to them, and they invite you to float alongside them often.
As I mentioned earlier, all kinds of cool added instrumentation come to play from keys to horns, and throughout the entire thing, you do have this sort of vibrant energy.
This is an important thing to express as well because it's a really robust kind of energy, but it's still sort of calm at the same time.
As I said, the vocals are really smooth and sort of flowy; they drift and dream, but the music can be very excitable, and when those vocals want to, they get a bit excited as well, especially during the bigger harmony parts.
The energy levels are very unique as well.
I feel like the whole thing is just very experimental. It's outside the box, but brilliantly pop, and those two things are what make this song really stand out.
It's not a song that's supposed to be labeled under one style or genre.
It messes several genres together to create something a bit refreshing.
This is a perfect example of a song that is billed with fewer boundaries than whatever you may be used to.
I feel like this is part of what the future of pop music is going to be like anyway. Just taking different genres and putting them together. Creating whatever you want based on how you're feeling.
It's all quite fun, and this song had a danceable four on the floor style beat, and was completely infectious the entire time.
So, jump on this track as soon as you can and don't be afraid to turn it up.
Remember where you heard it first.
