A brand new release from Hollow Heroes delivers a massive sonic drive In the form of a heavy rock soundscape that blends in 90s radio metal with grunge and more, all coming together to create something that's got some heart to it and waves of intensities that come and go letting the song feel alive and breathing in its own way.
"Liar" is a pretty explosive track, and everything down to the tone of the guitars does indeed bring out that late 90s or early 2000s super heavy radio-rock feel where it blends in alternative rock with a metal approach and brings together an edgier distortion with a warmer, grungier style too.
I love this because it showcases how these guys really put a lot of time and thought into the tones of their instruments and how it would come across on record.
There are definitely some trudging riffs and some vast undertones here that let the song feel a bit cinematic, but I think one of the things that really reaches out and grabs you about this song is the fact that it's got some emotional backbone to it.
At the start of the song, you have some samples that give you an idea for the premise or sentiment of the track, but I feel like it can still be taken in different ways depending on who's listening.
Lyrically, you can look at this track as a political one. You can totally understand the struggle and emotion behind a political standpoint, being lied to by the government, and being pushed to a certain limit.
However, it can also feel very personal. The lyrics can also be taken in a way that feels much more personal, meaning it could be about a relationship between two people.
It is about relationships, though, and all the struggles that come with them, along with being able to trust in that relationship, whether it's with a person or with a higher entity like a corporation, government, and so on.
None of us like getting lied to, and eventually the truth gets uncovered in some way, shape, or form, so I feel like this song is super relatable and a lot of people are going to connect with it.
I definitely really liked the impact of this track and how powerful it was with its sentiment, but also musically.
It hit really hard, the drumming was just pounding and destructive, which I feel like gave a lot of drive to the song and let the rest of the band follow suit.
I also loved this energy overall. It almost felt like a lot of this song was tracked live on the floor, and everyone involved was just feeding off each other's energies the entire time.
You just get that live performance aesthetic with this track because of how much punch the performances pack.
There are some great and surprising changes here that thrash out in classic metal style, like listening to the first Metallica record, for example.
This track felt kind of nostalgic for me. I grew up in a time when a lot of this kind of stuff was all over the radio, and these guys really nailed that aesthetic in my mind.
You can tell this is coming from a band who have a love for their craft and put everything they can into the actual recording of a song. Listening to this track makes you want to go see them perform it live in your face.
If they can capture this kind of aesthetic and raw energy on record, then seeing them live must be awesome.
It's not often you catch a song on record and immediately know the band is going to be ridiculous live, but with these guys, it comes through loud and clear.
Again, this is one man's take. I really do feel like this is a song that has an impact, message, power, energy, and a lot of personality to be delivered, and although certain people may take it in differently, the output from the song is something you just can't ignore.
Hollow Heroes is a band with plenty of releases under its belt, and each one brings a different side of the band's personality and songwriting to the table.
Upon listening to this track, I took a bit of a deep dive into their Spotify catalog, and there were a ton of ridiculously great releases, including an album from 2022 that just blew me away.
I would start with this track and definitely go back from there, combing through their music because it's so worth it, especially if you love heavy, melodic, spacious, hard-hitting music.
Take a deep dive into this band right now and remember where you heard it all first.
