An album release from ShitNoise brings out a soiree of ferocious and fuzz-toned grit in the form of vivacious punk rock, garage pop, and theatrical performances that all build a very intense and sort of thrashing approach.
The I Cocked My Gun and Shot My Best Friend album is dripping with static-driven noise-rock approaches that definitely do more than hint at classic, old school, 80s punk rock, along with a revived sort of garage-punk tonality that lets everything feel fast and loose and helps create a record that has no walls built around it.
The thing that hits the hardest about this record is not only its set of eclectic approaches and heavy rock and fuzz tone noise music, but more its incredible energy because when you listen to this record, it feels like you're watching a live performance.
That massive level of intensity hits like a sucker punch to the gut and the entire record has not only some surprises but a killer blend of grindcore, heavy punk, hardcore, doom rock, hints of metal and thrash, and just tons more a gigantic record that you have to hear to believe.
The whole aesthetic of this record is to have this intense and driving Sonic presence that just overpowers everything and leaves you in all of whatever you just heard.
Having said that, songs like "Gum Opera" can really deliver that theatrical and vintage punk approach, blending in that newer garage style but also keeping true to those older influences, and it's songs like this that deliver the animated and addictive, colorful but still edgy vocals along with catchy riffs.
Tracks like this are the ones that hold everything together super well.
Then there are songs like "Floating", which provide a much heavier sound by using deeper chords and a more hardcore/metal approach that reminds me of bands like Deftones, for example.
So, you can see that there is a massive amount of influences coming into play, and if you listen to this whole record, you will hear all of them come through in different tracks.
Tons of inventive riffs and in-your-face vocals are completely exciting and electric, and it lets the entire record demand that you join it.
"Hacked" is one of my favorite tracks on the record because the riff is insane, and you have those little elements of augmented guitar sections in between those, reminding me of heavier, more hardcore bands on the East Coast in the late 90s or early 2000s.
This is such a great blend with those animated and in-your-face style vocals because they're not screaming. They're balancing out this more sort of fun and quirky style along with that ultra-heavy and augmented riff that you're hearing, so it's such a great combination of approaches.
This whole record is absolutely massive with songs that crush it in terms of guitar performances and drumming that doesn't just sit in the pocket, but really brings liveliness to the entire record.
This is a release that is completely alive and breathing, and by the time you get halfway through the record, you begin to expect the unexpected, which is something that was completely refreshing for me.
I dove deep and hard into this one, and it did hit with such a unique gusto and set of performances that it took me away from whatever I was doing and put me in this amazingly and aesthetically brutal but fun set of hardcore and garage-punk performances that blew me away.
This was something that you should most certainly be listening to all the way through from start to finish.
If you dig this record, you should also check out a follow-up release called Times New Roman.
This brings some different songwriting styles to the table, but it still follows suit with that outside-the-box fuzz tone approach.
I certainly suggest listening to I Cocked My Gun and Shot My Best Friend first because it is an amazing introduction to how these guys do their thing and how powerful it can be in terms of that semi-doom thrash punk style being spun into something that really does pack a massive punch.
This record will stick with you, and if you love punk rock, garage-rock, garage pop, hardcore, and aren't afraid to go the distance, then this record is 100% for you.
Take a deep dive into this one and remember where you heard it first.
