The Rat Utopia Experiment returns with an absolute threshing banger that reaches into the depths of everything riot rock was built on while blending in elements of punchy garage and loads of swagger-riddled attitude that all come together and create something that hits hard and boasts unbelievably infectious energy.
"Blast!" comes through as a 2-minute powerhouse that is absolutely relentless and completely addicting. This embodies what a lot of punk rock is all about, but for me, it does hit that classic riot rock sound, blending elements of some of my favorite bands from youth like Bikini Kill, L7, and even 7 Year Bitch.
The track starts off with a cheerleading intro where the vocalist calls out the letters, and the band starts coming in and responding. This starts to hype you up for the energy level that the song portrays, but you still don't really know what's coming.
Shortly after that, they come in with a vocal version of the main riff, and I really loved this element because it was almost theatrical in a way.
Just after that, that banger of a riff comes right in, and it hits this grungy, thrashing sort of gritty tonality and approach that absolutely.
This is one of the best songs the band has released to date, in my opinion. This is mainly because The Rat Utopia Experiment is very well known for their live performances, and a lot of the time, on record, they're able to portray some of that very well, but on this track, in particular, it just thrives with that live performance aesthetic.
The whole thing feels like it was definitely recorded live on the floor so that everyone involved was just feeding into each other the entire time.
This track exemplifies the band's synergism and how they're able to bounce off each other to create this gigantic sonic drive that you just can't turn away from.
This is also one of the more fierce tracks in terms of the vocals and just a rambunctious approach from the band themselves.
She really gets in there and gives that animated approach during some of the verses, and then, during the course, she just shreds. Her screams are explosive, and the guitar work on this is really intense and sort of swirling. It's something that feels frantic, but that's kind of what it's all about.
It's hard to capture that kind of frantic energy and feel, but for this band, it's just completely natural.
This is one of those songs that you hear and immediately know you want to go see them perform live.
They're able to capture that intensity on record super well. I think that's what this is all about. Being able to deliver something that is closed-fisted, high-octane, packed with character, and it's kind of like Whiplash.
Again, this is a classic 2-minute thrasher, and if you're going to listen to it, then turn it up. This was meant to be heard at a high volume so that you can put your fists in the air and scream along, if you can.
If you're not super familiar with the band just yet then start with this track and work your way back through their catalog because they have a lot of killer stuff including the very recent "Leviathan" single that's been doing very well and has really showcased some of the band's songwriting styles, but don't skip out on "Creature Comfort", which is a track that is quickly become the bands anthem.
There's a lot to take in, and if you start with "Blast!", you'll be blown away and a little shaken up from it all, but you'll be very intrigued to check out the other music as well.
This song is a perfect example of how the band is able to put their best efforts forward and give something that's just super authentic and rips right from the start.
They call your attention straight away.
So, check this out right now so you can see exactly where I'm coming from and don't forget where you heard it first.
