Matty Aiko is set to release a full-length album that breaks the boundaries between pop, R&B, soul, and plenty more, all rolled up into one big release that showcases a lot of presence, personality, and honesty.
The Daydreamer album is a record that doesn't really hold back in terms of letting a lot of the artist's inner thoughts come spilling out for everyone to soak up, which is quite a refreshing approach because the artist is Young and already able to write and create songs with fewer boundaries than you may be used to.
This is going to be an immense record with 14 tracks, and it all starts with a single called "But, You".Â
This first song showcases his R&B and hip hop-influenced flow right from the get-go, with insanely soulful and passionate vocals that you get hooked on right from the start.
It's got plucky guitars, smooth overtones, and an inventive vocal approach that features call-back lyrics, and the way that he lets them bounce off of each other is wonderfully done.
This whole record features a lot of slightly outside-the-box approaches in both production and lyrics, style, and songwriting.
This first song is an amazing introduction to the rest of the record because you are going to hear several of those classic Staples throughout the entire album release.
Having said that, this is most certainly a record you want to listen to from beginning to end simply because there are more than a few surprises around its corners, and there are fluctuations of intensity that come and go throughout it all, keeping you on your toes, and getting you more attached and embedded into all of the character that is delivered.
You have elements of dance-pop, hip hop, spacious electronic underbellies, and more. Songs like "Get Right" exemplify some of the dance influences the artist takes on, and the way that everything comes through on a track like this is beautiful simply because the tone of his voice can be so robust.
The way his vocal tone fits and blends with the instrumentation and style of the track really makes for something special.
You can hear this incredible energy throughout the playthrough of this record, and this is part of why the album is so addictive.
He shed so much light on who he is as a person. A lot of songs give little pieces of himself so that you can put all of them together throughout the whole record and sort of get a view of who he is.
There's also a lot of raw swagger going on, which I think just comes to him naturally.
Matty is an artist who doesn't hold a lot back in the way of giving a certain sense of freedom with his songwriting. There are very few walls built around the songs, so some of them feel a little bit more emotional, while others just feel more like radio singles.
Either way, you're getting this particular and vibrant soundscape.
Most of the time, his vocals are just so addicting that you can't stop listening.
Yes, the songwriting is really well done, the production is outstanding throughout this entire thing, but it's his voice that wraps itself around you and keeps you right where it wants to.
This is what lets you get engulfed in the record.
"Model Behavior" is a great example of this.
In this single, he uses his voice almost like an instrument itself. He displays this gorgeous melody line right from the start, and you get hooked on that.
This is another staple that comes and goes throughout the record: the way he leads a song with a hook.
Sometimes he comes into a track and gives you the juiciest part right up front so that you're craving it again as the song unfolds.
You're listening to this track and waiting for that great hook to come in again, which you know will happen. Matty always seems to deliver, especially in those aspects.
Certain tracks have a deeper feel, bigger and more ambient undertones that give a very expansive soundscape, leaning towards a dreamier pop approach, but never straying far from the R&B roots that Matty is already known for.
By the time you get three or four songs into this record, you've been pulled in.
As I mentioned before, this is an album you want to listen to all the way through, from start to finish. It is a big record, but it's worth every minute.
There are plenty of songs that stand out as singles, like the ones I've already mentioned, but listening to the full record gives you a better experience.
This is not just because it gives you more of a picture of who he is, which it certainly does, but more because you're getting a full spectrum of what the album has to offer.
You can hear the slew of influences the artist portrays and how his youthful vigor and natural knack for catchy melodies and passionate, heartfelt performances are staples of his artistry.
I would actually suggest listening to this record with headphones on because it's the best way to soak in all of the layers and textures that are going on throughout its course.
All in all this was a beautiful record that certainly showcased an artist who is clearly in it for the passion of doing it.
This is a songwriter but also a singer through and through.
He's the kind of singer who does harmonies with the songs on the radio while you're driving in the car.
The full Daydreamer album is set to release on December 15th, but until then, you can tide yourself over with the first seven tracks freshly released today.
Check all of this out now and remember where you heard it first.
