Matt DeAngelis Showcases His Honest Approach To Pop Music

The latest single release from Matt DeAngelis delivers a massively theatrical sort of approach with bopping pianos and rhythms that are very catchy, and this showcases Matt's pop sensibilities. As he tends to branch off in different directions, he almost always holds on to some of that pop element, but this track puts it at the forefront.
I really enjoyed that aspect of it because it's kind of groovy. The track grooves really well; it's got deep pockets in terms of that rhythm and balance, and it comes off colorful, which I found really interesting because of the sentiment of the song itself.
The track is called "Playing God", and it's kind of a play on how a lot of people want to have more control than they do. Whether that means their own lives or the lives around them, we as people often wish we had more control over different aspects of life in general.
Of course, we absolutely do not. There is very little that we actually do have control over, but at times, we like to pretend that we do.
This single articulates such an interesting way to describe all of that.
Just the sheer fact that it kind of displays how we tell ourselves we're in control of our lives enough to believe it is pretty outstanding.
This is something that we all think about from time to time. Or, at least I do. I see it everywhere, even in myself, and to have a song like this almost reminds us that we don't have that kind of control. Things are not in our hands completely.
Yes, there are elements in the day-to-day that we are fixed into. We can oversee certain aspects of life, but all in all, in the grand scheme of things, the bigger picture is out of our hands indeed.
Now, this track comes through with a flavorful set of progressions and a great blend of tones coming from the pianos, also heavily influenced by some classic rock, bringing certain attributes of psychedelic vibes into the mix during the pre-choruses.
When it comes to Matt's songwriting, there's always something real lyrically. He's always coming from a genuine place and pulls from life experience, spins that into amazing lyrics that you can connect with, and then writes a song about it.
It makes one wonder if the music comes before the lyrics, or vice versa.
I wonder about that because again, the music is so bright, pop-coated, bouncy, and addictive.
When Matt writes a song, even though it always comes from an authentic space within his mind and life, he really experiments in terms of his sounds.
Whether the song is more pop or alternative rock, contemporary, theatrical, or indie-pop feeling, he's always got a handle on being able to deliver something that has a little bit of impact, is super honest a lot of the time, and is bound together with hooks that stick with you.
This track is a damn near perfect example of all of those things rolled into one.
It makes you realize that the artist is very influenced by all kinds of different genres, and because he branches out in all these different directions when he's writing music, he creates his own sound. He builds his own space to write songs within, and the outcome is something that has his name all over it.
This is something you don't come across often, and in order to pull this off, you have to write songs in a pretty consistent manner.
Matt DeAngelis absolutely puts out music on a consistent basis.
"Playing God" is the third track released this year alone, following six tracks dropped in 2025, including stripped-down acoustic versions of originals and plenty more, reaching all the way back to 2019 with his first single.
If this is your first time getting into Matt's music, then this track is a great way to open the door to the rest of his music.
I would go backwards from this release and listen to the previous songs from this year and last year to really get a feel for what he's doing.
Again, you're going to find different styles, genres that bend, and all original music that has a tendency to speak to you.
He definitely doesn't hold back in the way he writes lyrics and gets those thoughts on paper, then into song.
Because of that, a lot of the music that he puts out there puts you in the moment with it.
This track, in particular, as I mentioned earlier on, delivers a lot more of that bopping pop approach and shows that he's great at it.
Also, blending meaningful lyrics pulled from deeper thinking with music that's so bright and poppy is a great mix.
