Maeve McMahon returns with a new single that gives you more insight into her personality by telling you a story that's incredibly relatable while hitting emotional chords wonderfully.
Now, Maeve is an artist who usually puts pieces of herself into her music, so this part was no surprise. What really hit me was the intensity levels of how the song comes through.
The song starts a little more subtly with acoustic guitar and vocals. During this section, you hear haunting backing vocals that are floating through the song's ether and adding immense depth to everything.
This is also a style and approach that boasts emotional backbone.
As the song opens up you get live percussion, electric guitars, and everything just becomes more robust. The song feels full-bodied and lush as you swim through the soundscape she's delivering.
This is definitely pop-coated, but has that cinematic feel to it as well, which is also nothing new for the artist. She's able to pull together a combination of musical intensities and emotion, along with paying a lot of attention to the tones of her instruments, to create something that has a big atmosphere that pulls you in.
This is a heartbreak song. Or at least it feels that way to me. It's a song about a relationship where all of a sudden one person sort of bows out and runs away.
You're left wondering why they ran off and feeling jaded because of it all.
And that is the title of the track itself.
"Jaded" is unafraid to delve into those inner emotions and thoughts that you have when you're in a breakup-style situation. A situation where you feel like you're owed more of an explanation.
This song pinpoints that feeling super well, and it's not just because of the lyrics. Her lyrical approach is always very detailed, and she is amazingly down to be vulnerable on her tracks.
I think that's part of why it has so much character and why you get attached to it. It's the honesty and the openness of how she delivers and articulates her lyrics so that you can connect with them that makes it feel so authentic.
However, the music behind everything also pushes those values. The instrumentation and how the song grows into something bigger and more intense are a huge part of the emotional roller coaster that you go through in this kind of situation.
Being intoxicated at the beginning of the relationship, feeling like things are going well, maybe even being in lust or in love. And then, all of a sudden, things fall apart, and you don't really know why.
These are the attributes of the song that really hit hard because I feel like a lot of us have been there.
It's not exactly being ghosted, but it is being left without that explanation. It's about wondering why the other person left in the first place and just being stuck that way.
In the end, the song goes into actually thanking the other person for sharpening her senses. Letting her be more aware. But most of all, bringing her to the understanding that she is enough. She's good enough, and she deserves better than whatever happened.
I think that's the light at the end of the tunnel. And when we're in a situation like that, songs like this let us feel like we're not alone, so I think they're important to hear.
I would consider this to be more of an acoustic pop track than anything else, but it definitely has more going on than just that.
As I mentioned earlier, it's massively cinematic, it has tons of layers to it, it's very engulfing, and you end up being washed away by the instrumentation, emotion, and lyrics of everything.
This song is for just about everybody, and it stands tall in terms of the artist's releases; however, I can say that releases like "Flickering" and "Recklessly Blind" also certainly showcase different sides of who she is as an artist and as a person.
Again, she always keeps that pop sensibility in mind but lets herself run free at the same time.
Take a deep dive into this single right now, and while you do, have a read through of our interview with Maeve McMahon below to find out exactly where the song actually
Remember where you heard this first.
Let's talk about the "Jaded"! This track was honest, featuring dreamy undertones alongside some great edginess! Where did this song come from?
This song came from a deeper place in my heart, bringing up emotions I hadn’t felt before. I was distracted with lust, not being able to see someone’s true character until it affected me. It hit hard and marked a colder time in my life, especially since I was already going through an identity shift entering my senior year of college.
During that time, I was discovering a new sound musically, shifting my look into something darker, and opening up an edgier side of myself. This experience pulled out a moodier side of my songwriting and of who I am that I didn’t even know existed. Even though it didn’t feel good at the moment, it gave me thicker skin and a clearer sense of where my music was headed.
I found a stronger, smarter, more empowered version of myself through it, and I poured all of those emotions into this song. I brought the idea to a close friend of mine, Sophie Vincent, who’s an incredibly talented songwriter, and we decided to co-write as a way to decompress. We ended up bonding over the theme because she had gone through something really similar at the same time.
We wrote “Jaded” in less than an hour. It basically wrote itself. The song captures the feeling of losing yourself in a relationship while balancing vulnerability with an unspoken confidence. It reflects that shift from emotional haze to clarity, turning disillusionment into empowerment.
I'm hearing a few different approaches to this release! Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
Influences:
-Miley Cyrus
-Mazzy Star
-Sombr
-Chris Stapelton
Did you record this at a home setup, or at a big studio?
I found new producers while scrolling on TikTok one day when these two guys from Nashville popped up on my feed saying they were looking for new artists to work with. I remember really liking th e vibe they gave off, so I reached out on a whim.
We ended up hitting it off, and I decided to take a chance by working with them virtually on a new song of mine. I recorded my vocals in my home studio in Boston over FaceTime with them to capture the essence of “Jaded,” and it honestly still felt like an in person session because I could tell they were just as passionate about the song as I was. I sent the vocals their way, and they produced “Jaded,” bringing the rest of the song together in a short time.
How did this all start for you as an artist?
I originally started out releasing pop folk music, then moved into EDM, and now I’m stepping into indie rock. I write based on my personal experiences and whatever phase of life I’m in. This time feels different, though, because I’ve always had an edge to my performances, and now my music finally reflects that.
Discovering this moodier, edgier side of my sound has given me a deeper connection to both my songwriting and my performance than ever before. These recent experiences and songs feel the most raw and authentic to who I am as an artist so far. I’m going to keep leaning into that and showing the realest version of myself.
I plan to continue moving more into rock with my future releases. This is just the beginning.
Do you do any live performances?
I gig almost every weekend in Miami or Boston, depending on whether I’m at school or not. Right now, I’m consistently performing at different bars, breweries, restaurants, and artist showcases around me. It gives me the chance to gain exposure as an artist and bring people together through songs we all love.
I perform covers with my band and mix in a good amount of my originals to switch things up and see how people respond. I have my senior showcase coming up on April 23rd, where I’ll be performing all original songs from my upcoming album. It feels like the end of an era, wrapping up everything I’ve written over the years along with some newer songs.
After college, I’ll be performing at the Montauk Festival in New York, continuing to play my originals live and find my core audience.
Now that this is out, what's next for you?
Once I drop this album to kick off the summer, I’ll promote it through social media and my shows, and then start preparing for my move to Nashville, Tennessee.
My plan is to gig, do open mics, attend writing sessions, find my band, build my team, and throw myself into the scene. I want to dive in fully as a hustling musician in a city full of talent, pushing myself to grow as an emerging artist.
Who's in your headphones right now?
Ella Langley
What would you tell people they can expect on this release?
Quote:
“I wrote ‘Jaded’ with the intention of telling a story about seduction, illusion, and emotional awakening. It lives in that space where love feels intoxicating until it starts to unravel. This song is about me reclaiming myself after being lost in someone else. In the end, it's not about heartbreak, it’s about the power you find after it.” - Maeve McMahon
Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?
No matter what hardships you go through, don’t let them take your light. Feel it, and let it build your strength. I know it sounds cliché, but it’s true.
This song shows a more vulnerable side of me, meant to capture the feeling of a never-ending loop of chaos with someone who leaves you drained and “Jaded.” Sometimes we have to go through these experiences to reclaim our energy and discover a cooler, stronger version of ourselves. We’re meant to feel every emotion,
so why not embrace it?
I’m grateful to the people who make me feel, and I encourage you to take the risk of letting these emotions shape a newer, wiser, empowered version of yourself.
