Hail The Ghost Gets A Bit Dark But Real With "Digress"

Hail The Ghost is known for releasing and creating songs that have messages behind them, whether they are stories or personal attributes that get delivered boldly and with very few boundaries or walls built around. The music is normally very vast and always has that cinematic feel to it, which is always one of my favorite aspects about the soundscape that's usually brought to light through their songs.

Lyrically, there is almost always very little being held back. At times you can interpret songs differently, as a lot of us do and will, but others everything is very straightforward and the new single release, "Digress" while still delivering that spaciousness, can put forth a very personal set of thoughts that unfold as the song does, and there's a particular kind of rawness to how it's all put together.

Again, when I talk about rawness, I'm speaking purely from a lyrical perspective.

When you listen to the song, you can hear that there is authenticity behind it.

The song has a little bit of darkness to it, for sure, but that's part of its realness.

It speaks of the thoughts that run through your head before you lie down to sleep.

Now, a lot of us go through personal struggles and thought processes that challenge us, especially when we're going to sleep for some reason. There always seem to be things that you think about while you close your eyes and you're trying to drift off, that prevent you from doing so.

At least, this happens to be on a pretty normal basis. I'm not sure what that says about me personally, but I don't think it's very uncommon for this to happen.

A lot of the time, it's more about stress. Worrying about the future, worrying about the past, and more along those lines.

In this single, the lyrics seem to be a little bit more existential. Looking at days past and decisions made, feeling unwell about so much, and then eventually saying, 'okay it's time to sleep now.'

I think the title "Digress" comes from a perspective I've never-ending thought and wanting to digress so that you can just get some sleep already.

Now, the more I listen to the song, the more something else sticks out to me. The song also feels like someone who may be on death's doorstep. The kind of thoughts they might have at the end of life. Maybe regrets, maybe worries.

So, what was really interesting about this is that the more I listened to the song, the more I kind of went back and forth between the two concepts and sentiments.

Now, this is exactly what I'm talking about when I mention how songs can be interpreted differently, but how this project particularly uses emotion to push the sentiment through as far as possible.

There is a sullen or sort of sadness to this track. Yes, it's dark, but it's also kind of sad.

It's got a beautiful flow and structure. It's dreamy and floaty, which again are some of the staples of the project in general.

How do the songs give you descriptive lyrics that let you paint pictures or have you deciphering things, and you find yourself connected?

Part of that connection is outside of the lyrics. Part of it is more in the performances and the mood that the songs deliver instrumentally.

This song feels like it is swallowing you whole. I think that's because of both the lyrics and the music itself. Because you make that connection to the lyrics and you can feel the tone and the mood of the music pulling you in, you can be engulfed.

This is something I think is part of its purpose. I think it's important to get engulfed in songs like this. Songs that have a certain kind of purity to them because they're so upfront or honest.

To me, this was a beautiful song. It doesn't hold anything back. It says what it wants to and does it in a way that you can understand and relate to.

It's not over the top, it's very well balanced and textually enticing, sort of loose, drifting, and elegant.

The single is the latest in a string of them that have been released from the band, and the last three or four have just been amazing.

They are now really showcasing that balance between emotion, detail, lushness, vastness, and mood.

It all fits together in such a unique way, and this track is a perfect example of all of that.

"Little Lungs" was released previously to this one, and it's an absolute must here along with "The Mirror" and "Seeps".

If you dig this track, you're going to absolutely love these other three.

I've said this before about the project, and I'll say it again: this is for people who want to feel something when they listen to music. You also have to be someone unafraid because you will end up connecting with some of this stuff.

It is sort of moving in a way, and I look for material that has that ability.

For Hail The Ghost, this is their forte.

Don't miss this one and remember where you heard it first.
