A new album release from Goodnight Sky delivers a heavy rock soiree that breeds grunge, classic rock, alt-rock, and an almost garage-toned underbelly. Those are paired with some wild and almost psychedelic synths that build a lot of atmosphere into these tracks. It all comes together to create something vast and impactful, but still fun and colorful.
The Oceania album certainly doesn't waste a lot of time coming in with these expansive and almost trippy soundscapes while subtly bringing in that vintage 90s underground alt-rock soundscape, and it works perfectly because they nail the aesthetic in terms of guitar tone, vocal approach, and the entire energy of the record.
There are parts of this album that make me feel like these songs were recorded live on the floor to an extent, at the least. It's almost like these guys were feeding off each other's energies the entire time.
Even if I'm wrong about the whole 'live on the floor thing', listening to this record makes you want to go see them live because if that kind of energy and soundscape is captured so well on record then seeing them perform it all live must be awesome.
You just get the vibe that they're an amazing live band from listening to this album
There are plenty of surprises around the corners and some of the synths and guitar riffs are even as memorable as the choruses can be which is something I really adore because I miss musical hooks in rock music.
These guys certainly do not hold back in terms of giving us those hooks, and these are the things that can stick in your head and bounce around for hours after the songs have ended.
As I mentioned earlier, the guitar tone alone on this record stands tall and gives the record immense drive along with the drumming on the record as well.
The two elements combined pack a lot of punch and I feel like a lot of the rest of the band feed off of that.
This is one of those records where you can tell each player, and each instrument complements the next. Each element of the record pushes the next one so the whole song can come through with this massive sound and sort of intensity at times.
Again, some of these tracks come through really anthemic, and that has a certain power to it.
The band's ability to capture that alternative rock aesthetic that I grew up with is incredible. The vocals are winding, bendy, a little bit gritty, and melodically enticing. They're performed with heart and a kind of passion that you can tell has some soul behind it.
This is also an album you want to listen to from beginning to end. Part of this is because, in a way, this album feels like a concept record of sorts. The songs seemed to interconnect in strange ways but there's still an outstanding array of songwriting approaches while having the whole record remain confluent.
The other reason is that, if you only listen to one or two songs from this record, you may get a little bit of a gist to what you can expect, but you will get nowhere near the full spectrum of what the album has to offer as a whole.
There are also a lot of really well-put-together production aspects of this record that let it shine as well. This is part of those surprises around the corners that I mentioned earlier, and I love those little changeups and surprises in the sound of the record as you go through it.
I would suggest listening to this record with headphones on simply because this is one of the ways you can soak it in the way it was meant to be.
There are layers to these songs and again come with they have certain kinds of atmospheres, synths, keys comic guitar solos, and all kinds of vastness in the underbelly of some of the tracks that really give them a bit of a punch and when you listen to it with headphones on you can pick up on a lot more of that stuff especially the first time around.
I love the guitar work in the vocal approach on this record, but the second time around, I found myself paying a lot more attention to those lyrics as well. A lot of that stuff also feels pretty honest and came from someplace authentic so that gives the record a little bit more depth as well.
Anyway, check this record out and again I would urge you to listen to the entire thing from beginning to end because it's well worth the 41 minutes and some odd seconds that it lasts.
This is for people who grew up loving bands like Alice In Chains for example, along with some heavier metal-type stuff too. This really holds together a certain kind of gap, and it nails that aesthetic.
Check this record out and remember where you heard it first.
