A new EP release from Jaz Dager brings about a beautifully lush and incredibly vast, progressive atmosphere that incorporates a cinematic rock approach with beautifully woven guitar sections, heartfelt performances, and warm vocals.
The Light Tricks album has more than a few surprises around its corners, and the entire thing has a wonderfully ear-catching aesthetic simply because it feels dreamy. There is an expansive underbelly with all of these tracks, and if you listen to the record from beginning to end, it serves as such a gorgeous escape from your own reality.
It's been quite some time since I've heard a record that let me escape into it and engulf me the way that this one did, but the soundscape of it is indeed quite engulfing, and has a wonderful way of wrapping itself around you and keeping you right where it wants to.
The guitar work is never dry. There's not a dry sound on this record. The drums, guitars, bass guitar, vocals, and everything else involved are really wet. There is something almost fantastical about this record, but also something quite honest about it.
The lyrics seem to come from someplace authentic, and its performances from instrumentation through vocals, all have this sort of heart to them, and it lets you connect with the record right from the start.
You can listen to one or two songs and get a gist or idea for some of the staple sounds that you're going to hear on the full record, but it won't give you the actual entire spectrum that the EP has to offer as a whole.
This was beautifully done, and there are intricacies involved that let you know there was a lot of attention paid to the details of creating the record itself, from the recording process and mixing to the songwriting and arrangement.
I love that it has such a spacious tonality. The guitar progressions are brilliant, colorful, and the whole aesthetic of the record has a certain shimmer to it, which, of course, all helps with the whole fantastical element I mentioned earlier.
Listening to this record somehow puts you in a state of Trance to an extent. For me, listening to the record made me feel like I was floating in a lake, staring up at the night sky, thinking about memories from my youth.
It just all has a certain depth to it and the way that it's put together and built is texturally brilliant.
There are layers of textures and sounds that create an atmosphere that you fall right into.
Again, this whole thing is very dreamy, and it grabs you by the hand and lets you float right alongside it the entire time.
I got caught up in this record quite quickly, and I loved some of the lyrical content along with how the vocals were performed because the singing on this EP has a beautiful flow to it.
It matches the flow of the guitars and the music.
A lot of it actually feels like it was recorded live to an extent. Like everyone involved was feeding off of each other's energies the whole time, and that's what gives the songs an almost alive and breathing sensation.
The whole thing was very beautiful, and it took me by surprise.
If you listen to the full EP from beginning to end, you escape into it and when it's over, you have to reacclimate yourself again.
You snap out of it and remember where you are.
Like I mentioned earlier, this record really did cause memories of my own to pop into my head, and that's just because of the aesthetic and sensation that the music itself gave me.
Everything fits together so well. There's a very particular Sonic presence throughout the course of this record that draws you in, and it's hard to explain, but it does have this almost cinematic undertone to it all.
I love this album and feel like it's something all of us should be listening to.
When you do listen to this, remember to do it in full. Listen to the whole EP because then you can get everything it was meant to give.
Also, try and listen to this record with headphones on because then you can really soak in all those layers of textures and atmospheres that it delivers.
There's a lot to take in with this release, and it feels great to do that with headphones on. You won't miss anything that way.
Do not listen to this record through computer speakers. It will not be doing it any kind of justice.
Check this record out and see how the music manages to swim through the air that surrounds you.
It's quite brilliant.
