If 3 is the perfect number, Galan Trio’s third installment in their series dedicated to the American piano trio hits the jackpot.
Following the critical success of the first two volumes, which explored works from the easterly states, Kinesis: Volume 3 expands the project’s acoustic horizons by incorporating electronics for the first time, all while remaining true to the series’ guiding principle: dynamic motion.
The double-album presents thirteen world-premiere recordings that treat the piano trio not as a fixed formation, but as a living, breathing space of interaction. From the graphic inspirations of Christopher Dobrian’s Shadow Play to the spectral expansions of Joao Pedro Oliveira’s Far Beyond, the works on this collection are in constant flux. The energy flows between violin, cello, and piano, creating a shifting landscape of resonance and texture.
The repertoire is as geographically and stylistically diverse as the American landscape itself. Highlights include Cindy Cox’s La mar amarga, inspired by the poetry of Federico García Lorca and the flowing forms of water; Pamela Madsen’s haunting Fragments From The Wasteland, based on T.S. Eliot; and Deborah Kavasch’s From Here to There, inspired by the water-themed poetry of Salvatore Salerno.
The program ventures into intimate memorials and abstract reflections, including Patricia Alessandrini’s Trio (Hommage à Geoff Nuttall), David Volk’s evocative Appalachian Uprooting, and Miguel Chuaqui’s politically resonant La Búsqueda, a meditation on memory and loss written during the 50th anniversary of the Chilean coup d’état.
“With Kinesis Vol. 3, the journey deepens,” says the Trio. “The idea of movement has gradually opened into new sounds and directions. In this volume, motion appears in many forms—in the exchange of energy between the three of us, in the shifting textures, and now, in the echo of electronics. The series remains in motion, open and evolving.”
Praised by Fanfare magazine for the “open ears and flexibility they display in so many idioms,” Galan Trio has built a unique bridge between their home in Athens, Greece, and the vibrant composition scene of the United States. Kinesis, Vol. 3 stands as a refreshing oasis in this ongoing odyssey.
