A new single release from Fergal Nash pays homage to a late Argentinian football player named Diego Maradona, and the song comes through with a heavy-handed emotion, a warm approach, and lyrics that lay everything out cut and dry.
"Diego" is a track that needed to happen for Fergal. You can clearly hear that this came from real emotion in the effect that the player's death had on himself and many others who follow the sport so closely.
This is an honest tribute and love letter to what Diego did for the sport and how he impacted so many in his pursuits.
The song features mainly clean guitars that are layered and give a beautiful progression, along with some vast undertones due to little hints of reverb effect on certain instruments.
There's also plenty of overlapping guitar work that is playing single note melodies and giving an extra layer and depth to the track and it's emotional standpoint.
All throughout, you still pay very close attention to the lyrics because you want to hear more about Diego and the effect he had.
The way the song is arranged is very unique because it tells an entire story, and as it does so, the temperament changes along with the levels of intensity.
There's only a certain point in the song where percussion comes in, full bass guitars come in, and everything is full swing. During those sections, you have more heavy-handed vocals that are double-tracked, and you start to really feel that story unfold emotionally.
The song goes on to get descriptive and talks about how the player went about turning the game into an art form.
One of the things I really loved about this is that, during the points that the song gets that detailed and descriptive lyrically, you can picture certain things in your head.
This is a first for me. I don't think that I've heard a song dedicated to a sports player that had this heavy impact, and I found it quite moving.
This was unafraid and definitely a little vulnerable, but felt like it was probably cathartic for Fergal to write and release.
As I said at the start, it seems like something that he needed to get off of his chest and to me, it's an Anthem to the sport and to the player.
Those overlapping guitar sections are just gorgeous. They wail a little bit, they bend, pushing the emotional boundary further, and they come in at all the right places.
They aren't overdone. They're sprinkled in throughout the track, which makes it tasteful, and the whole thing feels more elegant with them there.
This was a unique release but had a warm and very alluring tone. You can tell there was a lot of attention paid to the tones of those guitars and how the vocals would come across.
What's funny is that listening to the song almost played out like reading a chapter in a book. You're able to listen to the effects of Diego and how impactful it all was, while also hearing stories about how he did his thing.
It's a story about a player who broke boundaries in a way, and to Fergal, at least, changed the game a bit.
The song was written on the 5th anniversary of Diego Maradona's death and definitely serves as a testament to the effect that he had on the people who followed him in the sport itself.
This is for anyone who loves following Sports in general, simply because again, I've never heard a song that focuses on honoring a particular player after his death.
The way the artist describes how Diego changed the game and affected so many, especially him, is quite a beautiful and entrancing thing.
As I mentioned earlier, it is like reading a chapter in a book, and when it's over, you have to reacclimate yourself again.
I would definitely check the song out with headphones on so you can soak in all the layers of guitars and vocals, but also so you can take in all of the lyrics without really missing anything.
Take a deep dive into this single now and remember where you heard it first.
