The latest single release from Diamond Blacc delves pretty deep into the artist's personality and identity as a human being with lyrics that hold almost nothing back and come straight at you with not only loads of inner thought but actual traits of who he is as a person and all the different kinds of struggles and triumphs standing up and being yourself come with.
This is a song that kind of blew me away and it's no surprise because I'm not really a stranger to Diamond Blacc's music, which a lot of the time breaks some boundaries, and never ever has walls built around it in terms of what he wants to say and how he wants to say it.
This is an artist who is not afraid to speak his mind and is completely fearless when it comes to letting it out the way he feels suits him best.
Not all of the music he releases is super serious or anything, but there's always pieces of himself in the songs he writes, whether they be a little whimsical and more on the funny side, or a little bit more on the serious side, like this one.
It's not really that this track is serious; it's more that it takes bravery to be able to let out all the honesty that he does in one single track like this, especially the way he lyrically phrases everything.
It's something that you really latch onto and listen to a few times so that you can soak in everything that he's putting out there.
The track is called 'Who I Am", and that title is completely appropriate and makes perfect sense if you listen to the lyrics of this song.
He gets into so many layers of who he is as a person and how he got there that you feel like you understand him a lot better after listening to this one track.
This is something you don't get a lot, so when it comes along, you tend to pay attention.
I feel like out of all of his songs, this is the one that gives the most because he leans into it, and I think that once he opened up, the flow just came along with it.
There's something about it that feels natural in terms of that flow and openness.
Then again, this is an artist that pretty much always brings his A-game and drops songs that have been genres, cross boundaries, shed light on personality, humanize him, they're very vulnerable at times, and I feel like tracks like this are cathartic for people to write.
If I wrote a song like this, I would feel like I got a lot off my chest, and I think that's what's happening here.
This is a song that serves as a perfect example of an artist telling his story.
Others should probably take note simply because of the freeing and open approach that he takes, as well as the attention to detail that he gives lyrically and rhythmically.
The way the words bounce and flow is incredible, and this is kind of a staple for the artist a lot of the time, but this track kind of takes the cake when it comes to that.
Honesty is also a staple in Diamond Blacc's music, but again, this track also takes a bigger look at him as a whole, and that's not an easy thing to put together into words.
When I listen to songs like this, it makes me wonder how on earth someone can put so much into just one track and a song that's just over 2 minutes.
Just the fact that he's able to get all of that into a 2-minute single blows me away, to be honest.
This is conscious and addictive hip-hop blended with pop, R&B, and a shining personality that is not afraid to speak his mind and put himself out there no matter what anyone else might think.
This is for him.
The truck is beautifully articulate and still has a great flow, Rhythm, beat, and production.
With another outstanding single dropped, we absolutely had to ask him about this one.
We also wanted to find out where he's at these days in terms of his creative process, and more so, we had an interview with him.
Here's what happened.
Buzz Slayers: Are you working on anything fresh even right now? I feel like you always are!
Hahaha you know me too well! I’ve been working on some new music and my creative process lately has been a bit different but in the best way. I’m excited for you guys to hear fresh music from a new perspective with all new collaborators! I am entering a brand-new phase of my artistry and I cannot wait to manifest this new beginning and show you all its fruits!
Buzz Slayers: Have you been performing shows lately?
I am currently on a few waiting lists with some booking agencies for upcoming performance opportunities. So, I have been consistently practicing and waiting for the right match and the right call!
Buzz Slayers: This track felt freeing to me. You really spoke your mind here! Was it hard to do that? It feels vulnerable but also prideful at the same time!
Thank you so much! This song was extremely emotional and freeing for me as well. I initially wrote this song about four years ago and was hesitant to release it. The message was very profound and this is perhaps the most vulnerable and emotional music I have created. At the time, I was very new to music and not yet ready to put so much out on the table, so I archived it for some years. I’ve had so many ups and downs, even in the four years since the song’s creation and I’ve overcome a lot and grown so much. I am proud of the person I have become and I just felt like it was time to illuminate the parts of myself I had kept in the dark so long, especially my struggles around sexuality. The world needs to know its ok to be yourself and releasing this song allowed me to feel ok with being myself despite my fears and insecurities. It is my hope that this song reaches others who may be going through similar experiences.
Buzz Slayers: What would you say is your favorite part of making music?
My favorite part of making music is writing! I have been writing ever since I learned how to write. I used to be very shy and reserved because I did not always know how to verbalize and express what I was feeling. Writing in any capacity always gave me a way to express my thoughts and communicate with others. I used to be so fearful of rejection or judgement and often my peers weren’t usually the nicest to me. As an only child, I didn’t have anyone to share these things with, so I would write them and rip them up. It was my education that helped me become a more well-rounded and structured writer. Although there were many agonizing late nights writing reports, papers and assignments of all kinds, I am truly grateful because it served as my foundation for making music. I love music so much because it allows me to bring tangible life to my feelings and emotions and the beauty behind that process is otherworldly. I am so thankful for the gift of music, it saved my life!
Buzz Slayers: You have been releasing such great songs for a while now! Is there any sort of advice you would give to other up and coming artists out there?
I would tell others to believe in yourself and use your music to create the reality you wish to present to the world. So often, we equate success with popularity and views and numbers that you can lose sight of the art itself. Learn who you are and what you stand for and never deter from your truth. Ignore the naysayers and no matter what, never give up on yourself. Consistency is the key to success. Nurture your mind, body and soul because these are your tools to create. On your journey you will make mistakes and have losses, but they are lessons to make you better. Lastly to all the upcoming talent if no one told you, I believe in you and wish you nothing but the best. You got this!
Buzz Slayers: When can we expect to hear an album from you?
Although I do not have a set date yet, my debut album will encompass the fullness of Diamond Blacc and my story. I have been working on this album slowly but surely ever since I started making music. It will be the very best part of me. Each song will be a lived experience and right now I’m living and processing a lot in my life that will be expressed on this project. It is truly a labor of love so give me another year. However, I plan to continually drop projects during the interim.
Buzz Slayers: What would you say people can expect from this track?
I expect people to be challenged, restored and hopeful. While the song grapples with sexuality, the bigger message is that of identity. Too often we are categorized and marginalized and defined by society when society does not even take the time to get to know us. Who are you? What is your identity and what does it mean to you? It is my hope that every person who hears this is influenced to explore and appreciate aspects of themselves that often aren’t seen or even valued. We all have a story and it is often related to our identity. Your story matters, your identity matters and you matter!
Buzz Slayers: Are you planning any new videos in the near future?
It depends on the next release! I have really been enjoying visualizers lately, but since you mention it, I feel inclined to do another music video, I just need be inspired by the next song first!
Buzz Slayers: What are you doing when you are not making music?
Music has become so ingratiated with who I am, it’s so rare that I’m not doing something related to music. If it’s not music, work, school or interning, I enjoy my alone time and going for runs along the river. My social battery is just not what it used to be but I really enjoy getting fly and going out dancing or just kicking back with my close friends and family.
Buzz Slayers: What's next for you as an artist?
Big things! I feel like it is finally my time! I have elevated and ascended and feel very aligned with my destiny and purpose. I am free from a lot of influences who didn’t have my best interest and it has really allowed me to shed that which no longer serves my greatest good. I have never felt so free as an artist and as a human being. The joy and self-power I feel in my life is unlike anything I have ever experienced. I can finally spread my wings and fly!
