A massive new album release from Defise hits a wild and engulfing array of soundscapes that range from a vast rock to contemporary, cinematic, industrial, and even electro pop and it's all delivered with this robust and colorful sort of character that you end up getting attached to right off the bat along with this huge atmosphere that you fall right into.
The No Horizon album has a unique way of delivering a breed of honesty that's rarely heard on record, and it's done with descriptive lyrics and perspectives but what really grabs you is this eclectic array of songwriting approaches and how it all somehow comes together like glue.
This record was beyond impressive and when I say there's a few surprises around the corners I mean that in every aspect you can think of from the songwriting to the instrumentation, vocal approaches and all.
The album spans 11 Tracks and by the time you get even three or four tracks in, you begin to expect the unexpected and that's something I adore about the record because you just don't come across stuff like this anymore.
You can tell this is done by a group of people who have a pure love for their craft and when I say that I don't just mean playing their instruments or singing, I mean writing songs that are outside the box and doing it together so they can put them out into the world.
There are tracks that are straight forward, and there are tracks that are haven't guard and very experimental and I think that this is an album that you need to listen to as a whole, from beginning to end to really get a grasp of what it has to offer.
I don't think listening to one or two songs will cut it in terms of being able to understand the album as one piece of work.
This is another thing I absolutely love about it because this record is a massive escape and pulls you away from wherever you are and whatever you doing to put you into a whole different world and again, by the time you get halfway through this record your sort of on the edge of your seat not knowing what to expect next.
You just know that it's going to be good and it's going to have a sort of element to it that will feel like it has a pop undertone.
This has a heavily cinematic backbone in my opinion because a lot of these songs are actually expansive and vast. I really enjoyed the layers of textures and combination of sounds that this whole album delivers because by the end of it it's very satiating.
The vocals had such a wonderful layer of melody to a lot of these songs and you do end up paying attention to the lyrics quite often underneath all the swirls of musical notes that are floating through the ethers of the songs, but this has its own atmosphere and it's a rarity that you come across a record that you have to shake off when you're done listening to it.
As I mentioned earlier, there is great pop undertone throughout a lot of these tracks just different styles of it. But either way you're getting catchy elements and melodies that bounce around in your head for hours after the songs have ended and the only way to satiate that is to listen to them again.
This was more of an experience than just a record or album. I would recommend not only listening to this all the way through but doing it with headphones on so you can really soak in all the things that are happening in these songs because they are indeed as I mentioned earlier, quite expansive and have a lot happening in certain aspects.
This was musically genius, and it does involve everything from rock, contemporary pop, synth pop, and more along with piano-based tracks and just such an array of vibrant tonality that you have to react to meet yourself back to reality when it's all over.
Take a deep dive into this album soon as you can.
