A new single release from Asylum 213 delivers a wild array of rock with a unique character embedded in its veins and a few surprises around the corners.
"D.G.A.F." comes through with a quirky kind of bop during a lot of the verses and then explodes into alternative rock for the choruses. Still, there's a lot more to this because it involves other kinds of subgenres like classic underground '90s rock, little hints of math rock, pop rock, and garage rock, and there's just tons more that it's involved which is part of why this song comes through with such a unique approach.
There's no pinpointing exactly what genre this song is except that it's rock because it's arranged and composed with this sort of outside-the-box feel and style but this is part of why it has so much character.
If there was one thing that was a little different or missing from the track it wouldn't come through anywhere near the way it does now.
The guitar tones and the way they change his part of the arrangement and the base tone are perfect for this track.
The drumming comes through with classic end avant-garde type signatures at times and the vocals push the envelope with the almost animated underbelly.
The whole thing has as much color as it does edginess but again, there are a few surprises and changes during this track that let it get nice and heavy at times and showcase each of the instruments almost like a jazz song would.
I love the deepening sort of augmented heaviness of this track. The screaming sections vocally, and the off-the-wall and wild arrangement of this song because it makes it feel like it's alive and breathing.
Even by the time you get halfway through this 3-minute and 18-second song, you begin to expect the unexpected.
The whole thing has a fierceness to it but it's still really fun. It has a way of hitting like whiplash. It's like a sucker punch to the gut but by the time it's over you immediately want to restart it because you just need to hear everything that just happened one more time.
There's a strange addictiveness about this song and it showcases the band's ability to write together. This comes from a group of people who love their craft but when I say that I don't just mean singing, playing their instruments, or anything like that. I mean they love the craft of writing songs together that are unique and hit hard.
This track has an almost maddening vivaciousness, and it is indeed explosive and fiery. It's heavy in different ways than you would think and comes at you quickly.
Listening to this makes you want to go see them performing live simply because if this kind of energy was captured on record, then seeing them live must be a real face-melter.
It almost feels like this was actually recorded live on the floor to an extent and all the players involved were just feeding off of each other's energies the entire time.
Watching each other for cues and jumping around the room while they recorded everything.
Anyway, it feels that way. It doesn't mean that's how it happened but when you listen to the song you get that vibe or at least I do.
And that's an awesome vibe to have with a track like this because again, it is so alive and breathing. It's so in the moment that it takes you right there.
This was a brutal track and a different way, and I loved this unique style of heavy rock that feels strangely empowering.
The whole thing is infectious. But don't take my word for it, listen to this track as soon as you can and turn it up because it somehow sounds even better loud.
Remember where you heard it first.
