An EP release from Ashes of Souls delivers a vast undertone and outstanding blend of metal approaches that each beckon different elements of the genre, from melodic, classic, and even more hardcore approaches. This record boasts intense riffs, powerful, belting vocals, and thrashes out with a high-octane energy that is completely infectious.
The Legacy EP starts off with an intro that opens the door for the rest of the EP. This is subtle, vast, cinematic, slightly haunting, and features likely distorted guitars and this immense flow.
It is gracefully performed, heavily melodic, and serves as the calm before the storm.
The first full track is called "Hideaway", and right off the bat, you're getting heavy, trudging riffs and this full-on metal approach that is close-fisted and anthemic.
The vocal approach is really what makes this track hit the way it does. They're almost operatic and have that classic metal underbelly, and this works amazingly because the band performs certain elements of classic metal, making you think of bands like Iron Maiden, but bringing it into a new platform and adding a little bit more depth and heavier approaches and tones.
The guitar tones throughout this entire record are brutal. Although they are melodic, they certainly do a lot of palm muting, and the whole thing brings an incredible sonic drive.
Now, this is not a slow track. It's not speed metal exactly, but it thrashes hard, delivering a fast-paced approach and rhythm. The guitars are doing some amazing stuff throughout this record, and this track is a damn near perfect introduction to what you can expect from the rest of the record, simply because it does both some of the great staples that you will hear through the release itself.
"No Mercy" is the next track, and this one is pretty brutal as well. There's a lot of stomping from that kick drum coming through, and there's something about this track in particular that puts you there in the moment with the song.
A lot of this record feels almost like a live performance. They can capture this live energy and bottle it up for the record so well that it seems almost as if they've recorded a lot of this live on the floor, and everyone involved is just feeding off of each other the entire time.
The drummer is the one really pushing the drive throughout a lot of this record, and it does certainly feel like the guys are pushing off of his lead. That energy is completely unstoppable, and the drummer doesn't just sit in the pocket. He does all kinds of crazy stuff and adds this liveliness to the songs.
This is the kind of band that you hear on record and immediately want to go see them in a live performance setting, simply because if they can capture this kind of energy and aesthetic on record so well, then seeing them live must be outstanding.
The last track on the record is "Down The Line", which, at times, feels almost like they're bringing in elements of hardcore into the mix.
Again, this whole record brings on a slew of influences from old to new, and they're able to fuse all that stuff to create something that brings on its own atmosphere.
These are fist-in-the-air powerhouse-type songs. You find yourself wanting to sing along with the choruses; they're still mosh pit worthy, and a lot of tracks give you these great soccer punch riffs that just stay with you for hours after songs have ended.
The vocals are so good in terms of bringing great Melodies and inventive approaches. The tone of the vocals themselves blends so well with the music, bringing an added fiery and fierce tonality to the songs, but doing it in a way that again feels anthemic.
This was an immense record. They cover so much ground in just three tracks and showcase a lot of their love for the craft of songwriting together.
Don't skip any songs. This is an EP that you listen to from start to finish all in one shot.
You also do this loudly. There's no point listening to this EP at a super low volume or anything. You want to pump up the volume, and you'll find yourself banging your head along with a lot of these songs.
A momentous powerhouse of an EP, dive right into Legacy, and you'll see exactly what I mean.
This is for metal fans of all kinds. Thrash, speed, hardcore, classic, melodic, it's all there.
Check this out now and remember where you heard it first.
