A fresh single release from Goldfish Don't Bounce recently dropped, and this track has a righteous and vivacious rock approach and attitude through and through. The song comes right in with a great ref and this endless energy that comes in the form of what I feel like is a cross between classic arena and pop rock, and it all feels vibrant and super addictive right from the start.
Check out our interview with the band below and the full review of the single HERE.
Buzz Slayers: Let's talk about "Sex Crazed Freak"! This was such a killer track that hit with a memorable riff and performed with this righteous energy! Where did this track come from?
Like most of our music, Sex Crazed Freak was born out of jam sessions with the band. Charlie played a riff and we got behind it straight away! We structure the song from there on and then lastly add the lyrics.
Buzz Slayers: I'm hearing a few different approaches to this song! Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
We're massive fans of nineties rock but generally we just love all genres of music and you can hear this throughout our songs. All members of the band are in fact lead guitarists by trade, so we have a general ethos “if it isn't broke, don't fix it”. If it sounds good, then it sounds good so we don't get carried away with fine details. The answer may sound very generalised but that's just the truth of the band members, we have all the usual suspect guitar idols but we don't try to mimic, we just try to be ourselves and showcase the skills we have. Marco on bass and Callum on drums tend to play what we think we'd like behind the guitar as if it's them playing.
Buzz Slayers: We have to ask about that video! It was hilarious! How did you come up with this and did it come out how you expected?
Being an unsigned, independent band, we spend our money on the most important thing. Music. We value our incredible producer Neil Treppas at Artist Sounds Studio so much that we try to do the rest of the band requirements on as little as possible! The idea was to try and get a video viral however we got slapped with an 18+ straight away so it hasn't happened unfortunately. We took inspiration from Eric Pridz’ ‘Call On Me’, Olivia Newton-John’s ‘Physical’ and Electric Six’s ‘Gay Bar’. We found a dancer, the incredible Robyn Rush, who fancied shooting the video and gave her the vague description of “These are the videos we're paying tribute to, do us a dance and make us look daft”. We filmed it all and edited on our phones to keep it budget but turned up on the day not really knowing what to expect. We quite simply thought “we're good at p*ssing around, let's channel that!”.
Buzz Slayers: When did this all start for you as a band?
Goldfish Don't Bounce is a revamped version of a band Callum and Charlie had when they were teenagers. Ideas had been mooted for a while to start up again and after the COVID pandemic, we decided to give it a go in spring 2022! After failing to find a drummer and our original bassist leaving early in to the project, Callum and Charlie decided to do some writing as a two piece, working on songs until a drummer could be found. We recruited Marco on bass, a friend of Callums who had been in a band together before, and the band was complete! Callum enjoyed drums that much he decided to properly learn them and the sound was evolving that rapidly, we just kept it all as it was and rapidly wrote track after track!
Buzz Slayers: Are you performing live right now? Any touring in support of this release?
We're trying to get on to the local scene to pick up some momentum but we don't want to be playing empty rooms. We're trying to space out our gigs to pack the place out and make it a better occasion. We've got a couple of local gigs lined up to keep us going, one being “Ye Olde Man and Sythe” We're also in talks with agents about a little tours locally and then hopefully we can build from there! We can honestly say our digital side is performing better than our live at the moment!
Buzz Slayers: Did you record this in a home studio setup, or did you go to a big studio for this?
We record all our tracks with the aforementioned Neil Treppas in “Artist Sounds Studios”. He's a class act who's worked with a lot of big names in the industry. His specialty is R&B / Pop and this was a big pull to us. He's experienced in all genres but our weakest point as a band is vocals, so we thought having a producer who specialises in this would take the band to the next level, which we feel it has!
Buzz Slayers: Now that this is out, what's next for you as a band? Any upcoming releases on the way?
We're trying to release a single every 6-10 weeks at the moment depending on studio availability. We originally decided to record an album but after realising just how long that would actually take, plus the realisation that music isn't consumed in that way anymore by a lot of people, we scaled it back to constantly pumping songs out! Keep your ears open, we have many sounds coming for you but we're unmistakably Goldfish Don't Bounce! We have a shout-out for our autumn release “Inkybus” so named because we thought the song had a massive Incubus vibe!
Buzz Slayers: Who's in all your headphones right now?
Obviously Goldfish Don't Bounce! Generally, again we have a lot of classic rock rotation, there's never a clear favourite really!
Buzz Slayers: What would you tell people they can expect on this release?
Plenty of power, heavy riffs and balls out rock!
Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?
Keep listening, loving, streaming, viewing, attending and interacting!! Fans, us included, make all of this possible and the possibilities are endless with music! We keep making it to give enjoyment to people, it should be heard, appreciated and enjoyed by the masses. As long as people are listening we'll keep recording!
