An Interview with Baby Boomer Sounds

ree

A new single from Boomer Baby Sounds delivers a pretty honest track and one that plenty of us can relate to, especially in certain kinds of relationships, as the song talks about one person blaming the other when, in fact, they should be looking at themselves instead.

This is a sentiment that we can understand, and I find it almost refreshing to hear it in a song the way it's portrayed on this one.

"Take A Good Look A Yourself" is incredibly straightforward lyrically. It's actually something that you almost cheer on when you hear it because again, we've all been in this kind of situation and wish that we could just send someone a song like this so they could understand.

And to track that calls someone out. Take a look at yourself instead of blaming me for everything.

That's the kind of statement that makes waves, and it can also be a wake-up call.

This single takes on a great musical approach that feels almost theatrical, influenced by lots of different classic rock but also an edgy and slightly dark '90s rock as well.

There are amazing guitar parts and organs that fill the air giving it that thickness and helping it drive that classic rock feel, but it also makes me think of something from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

It's got that swagger to it, portraying the sentiment of the track vocally with a perfect attitude.

There is also some funk involved here. There is a deep groove, although heavy-handed in terms of its tonality, it's a groove all the same, driven by a funk rhythm.

As the song unfolds, you get some great guitar work coming in and out, including some lead stuff that just adds to that attitude-riddled approach.

The intensity sort of grows as well, and it works perfectly for the approach of the track.

This is a rock banger, with a unique chorus that speaks volumes for the songwriting because it feels a little bit cinematic but works in so many different ways.

The track is written by John Finamore, a songwriter out of New Jersey who is the key founder of the project.

As far as we can tell, John is performing a lot of the percussion vocals, programming, keys, and more.

This is a shining example of an artist who has taken things in his own hands and has a particular vision for a song.

I think it takes a lot to bring that vision to fruition the way that he does.

Again, the songs come through with attitude, swagger, soul, a little bit of blues, and it all gets rolled up into something that just feels alive.

I also thoroughly enjoy, once again, this sentiment. It feels like it came from some real place in the artist's life.

Lyrically, you can hear this authenticity in there, and again, super relatable for me and many others.

This track was an absolute blast and pulled together something that displayed a great level of truth in a refreshingly straightforward manner.

Plus, it's a heavy but danceable song.

Check this one out as soon as you can, turn it nice and loud, don't be afraid of it.

It's a very fun track; the composition, arrangement, and guitar work are all outstanding.

After listening to the song, we actually wanted to sit down with John and talk about where this track came from and what might be coming up next to the project.

Here's what went down.

Buzz Slayers: Let's talk about "Take A Good Look At Yourself"! The track hit this classic and hard rock vibe! I love those organs giving the track a massive atmosphere! Where did this song come from?

I was lucky enough to have Derek Sherinian of Black Country Communion (and solo projects) perform on this track as well as the songs coming up on my new EP next month, therefore the atmosphere. Besides his performances, I knew his overall sound and tone would help elevate the song.

I partially wrote this particular song about 3 years ago but could not find the right vibe for it until recently, which prompted its completion and release.

Buzz Slayers: I'm hearing a few different styles to this release! Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

I'm an old school classic rocker and having played in classic rock cover bands I have many influences, so here are just a few: Tom Petty, Warren Zevon, David Bowie, The Doors, Lucinda Williams, Mountain, Cream, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen.

Do you write songs together as a band, or do you have one or two main songwriters that bring ideas back to the rest?

I write all the material for Boomer Baby Sounds and to be honest I am more of a  DIY Indie solo act than a band.

Buzz Slayers: How did this all start for you as a band?

Some years back, when I lived in NJ, I had a small recording studio where I worked with aspiring singers and songwriters to make demo tapes of their songs. It was back then when I started to write and record original material but it was mostly just a hobby at that time. I resurrected it when we were locked down in California during the pandemic. Oliver Sean, an indie artist, podcaster and owner of WOA Records and WOA Entertainment in the UK heard one of my songs and  put it on an DIY indie artist compilation disk. He really got me started in a more serious way. This song " Take A Good Look At Yourself" will be on  WOA,s 15 anniversary CD, so we still stay in touch to this day. Oliver is a friend and giant supporter of indie musicians worldwide.

Buzz Slayers: Are you performing live right now? Any touring in support of the release?

No live gigs right now but I am itching to put together a band toward the end of the year.

Buzz Slayers: Now that this is out, what's next for you?

This song will be part of an EP entitled " I'm Your Huckleberry Now" that's completed and features Derek Sherinian on keyboards and Jim Riley from Rascal Flats on drums. It's coming out in September. In the meantime, I am always writing new material and should have another EP in December.

Buzz Slayers: Who's in your headphones right now?

 A playlist with Black Country Communion/Tom Petty/Joe Bonnamassa/ Iggy Pop/Stevie Ray Vaughn/Alice In Chains

Buzz Slayers: What would you tell people they can expect on this release?

NEW CLASSIC ROCK MUSIC!! Done to the best of our abilities.

Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?

While I enjoy listening to most genres of music, some say new classic rock is hard to find. But I think that it is out there and in that connection, we will continue to write/record/produce new classic rock & blues material for those who want to listen. ROCK & ROLL WILL NEVER DIE!
