An EP from Simako Creates Pop Atmospheres

Simako return with a new EP, and this time the sister duo gets personal and gives off a flowing and warm tonality that invites you to float alongside their soundscapes and atmospheres and listen to the stories told. This is a record that has a lot of personality embedded in its veins, and I think this is one of the more impactful aspects of it.

Closer/Further manages to blend gorgeous elements of dream pop, Indie pop, a contemporary pop-rock approach, and so much more, and by doing so, the duo creates something authentic, and with that, you find yourself wanting more and more.

Lush and colorful bass guitar lines, drifting guitar tones, and gorgeous vocal harmonies invade your ears and take you away into their world.

The record starts with "Won't Pretend", which gives off elements of a sort of pop and Americana undertone, but still leans more towards the pop than anything else.

The vocals are very soulful, which is a staple for the duo, and lyrically, you begin to get attached because she's telling such a detailed and descriptive story, letting a lot of those inner thoughts come out and allowing for the track to have some emotional backing.

These are a lot of the elements that you hear throughout the record, and it is one of those EPs that you should listen to in full, from start to finish.

The truck is followed by "Dancing on the Moon", which is absolutely beautiful and has more of a slow burn, but it allows you to pay attention to those lyrics, as she tells those stories and how she feels about things. This is one of the more vulnerable songs, in my opinion, and it's one that you find yourself connecting with because of its relatability and how she portrays that lyrically.

I dig the sort of edgier kind of undertone that comes through in some of the tracks like this one. You can hear some almost alternative rock influence, although it doesn't get heavy, per se, it still has a little bit of that edge that gives you the feeling that some of the influences involved were heavier.

There is definitely a bit of jazz influence in those guitars, and you can hear that peeking through in different tracks as well, so I certainly enjoyed the elements of smoothness and progressiveness along with the indie and dream pop sounds.

One of the most impressive tracks on the record is "Who You Are", as it brings out a different approach with those plucking guitars and more aggressive tonality in a sense. This one sort of comes at you instead of inviting you to float along with it.

It was a different approach and a perfect spot for this kind of song on the record because it breaks it up a bit and gives you a little insight into some of the diversity in songwriting and influence that they actually give off throughout the EP.

This is a song that is outstanding and in a sense, stands Tall amongst the rest for its experimental and inventive approach, along with this absolutely addictive guitar sound.

The closing track, "Stay All Evening", follows suit with some of those pluckier and particular guitar tones and approaches, but doesn't go as hard as the previous track did. This track definitely has a bit of an upswing feel and gives some funk influence because it's so incredibly danceable and gives a really deep groove. You end up wanting to move your body to this track, and I love how the EP evolves into this kind of thing from where it starts off.

One of the things that really helps this record capture the aesthetic that these sisters were going for is the percussion. The percussion across this record is almost everything in a way. It doesn't just give a backbone, it gives the songs a certain kind of liveliness and lets them inhale and exhale or bring out more excitable rhythms and slightly outside-the-box approaches.

This was a brilliant record that, if listened to as a whole, will bring plenty of surprises and elements you just didn't expect.

Being able to reel in so many different approaches and styles into this beautifully constructed pop record must have been very fulfilling for the duo because it was very satisfying to listen to.

The record is out now, so check it out, and again, go through it from start to finish because it's well worth it.

This was a layered and beautiful pop record that displayed lots of character and personality, honesty, vulnerability, emotion, and experimental approaches. It really broke a little bit of pop ground, and it felt great.

Remember where you heard it first.
