An Addictive and Sonically Driving Single from Colourtone

A new single release from Colourtone brings together some of the best elements of 90s underground alt-rock, along with hints of garage and plenty of grunge, all rolled into one fat single that comes with a lot of animated and character-riddled approach.

"Headlight" comes with a few great surprises, including a chorus that feels expansive, vast, and almost pop-rock influenced, in a sense.

The main riff brings out that grunge approach with a thick distortion and some great guitar work that includes an awesome little bend at the end of each one.

In between those catchy riffs, you have vocals that come in almost like spoken word but in a more punk rock sense.

This is where the whole garage rock element comes into play because there's a light amp simulator or distortion sort of fuzz tone element to the vocals as well, and there are these little spaces between those refs where it just focuses on drums and vocals for a minute.

This lets you really pay attention to what he's saying and lets you hear that sort of edgy vocal approach loud and clear.

I love this because it makes me think of bands like Mclusky, for example, where you have a bit of looseness and outside-the-box approach for the verses, and then when the chorus kicks in, it's a bigger, almost anthemic soundscape.

I love those choruses because of how they feel and the aesthetic that comes through during those parts. The guitars feel more layered during those sections, and there's a certain kind of shimmer to it all that makes it feel expansive and ambient in its own sense.

Even on those parts, the vocals are sort of edgy and belting loud, which is great because it sort of matches the energy of those rock guitars during the choruses.

It's a really fun track and addictive to say the least.

This track also makes me think of classic semi-underground grunge bands that I used to love, like Local H.

The whole aesthetic of that time period and the approach to heavy rock is so strong throughout this song, and for me, it gave me little bouts of nostalgia, which I absolutely adored.

Having said that, you can tell there is a slew of influences here and that the band really came together to create something that was not just well arranged but amazingly performed to the point where it almost felt like it was done live on the floor with everyone feeding off of each other's energies the entire time.

Every once in a long while, you'll hear a track on record like this, and immediately want to go see the band perform the song live in your face.

Even if I'm wrong about the whole live on the floor recording thing, listening to the song makes you want to see these guys simply because, if they can capture this kind of aesthetic and energy on records so well, then seeing them live must be awesome.

That energy is completely electric, the song blends those 90s grunge and alternative rock elements super well, swinging into the underground heavy rock styles for the choruses.

It's a track with attitude, and as I mentioned earlier, it's got loads of character and personality embedded in its veins.

The attitude and almost swagger, I would call it on those verses is perfection and it's that kind of attitude and vocal approach that gets you sucked into the song.

This track is accompanied by a pretty cool music video which showcases some of the presence of the band and creativity on the visual side of things.

It's one of the best ways to hear the song for the first time, but it's also really fun to crank this track loudly in the car because it has some power behind it.

It's got some layers to it, and the way the guitars were tracked and their tone also let the song come through with this edgy thickness.

Again, sick riffs, memorable choruses that are just big and have loads of shimmering sonic drive, and all in all, this track was a total banger that blended those heavy rock elements seamlessly.

Definitely check this one out as soon as you get a chance.

Of course, we've embedded the music video below so you can do that.

Remember where you heard this first.
