A fresh release from Jo James comes with plenty of soul and once you listen to the track you know exactly what I mean as it boasts such a lush and powerful performance that has a unique and vivacious sort of energy that combines personality with a little edginess, and it works like a charm.
"Peace of Mind" is a song that you end up getting attached to really quickly and that does have to do with that personality it oozes but also has to do with the tonality of the song and how warm it comes through.
There's something strangely addictive about the soundscape and aesthetic of this track.
It's got that blues soul rock feel with a roots undertone so it's so genuine and robust that you can feel it in your bones.
It's not just the vocals; it's also the guitar performance that really gets you.
That riff is everything and the rhythm and groove of the track grabs you and is completely danceable from beginning to end.
This is one of those tracks you want to sing along with the first time you hear it and by the second or third time you find yourself rocking with that chorus.
He's got a swagger in the way he performs. It's a little bit alluring and adds a certain kind of raw energy to the vibe of the track as a whole.
That energy is indeed electric, and it feels almost like this whole thing was recorded live on the floor to an extent and everyone involved was feeding off each other the entire time.
It just goes to show how Jo James knows exactly how to put a song out there with a vibrancy to it. Something that has an authenticity and some heart.
It's been a while since I heard a track with this much soul pouring out of it and it feels good to crank this one nice and loud.
When you hear this song, you immediately want to see and perform live. If this kind of energy is captured on record, then seeing it performed live in your face, would be amazing.
I love hearing an artist on record and knowing immediately that seeing them live would be outstanding. Jo James is no exception to that rule.
You get such great guitar work on this song and that performance pushes the envelope with winding bends and again, soulful approaches that make you feel like you listen to a lot of the classics in blues guitar growing up.
As a matter of fact, this track manages to pull together a few different influences here and it's part of what makes it so unique.
He's not reinventing the wheel by any means but he's taking these different influences and putting them together, putting in his own spin, and giving it an incredible energy that makes it stand tall.
You can feel this song from beginning to end and it's the kind of track that will stop you in mid-conversation and walk over to the radio so that you can find out exactly who you're listening to when you hear it.
After listening to this track, I took it upon myself to take a bit of a deep dive into his back catalog and I'm glad that I did. He has several outstanding releases including an album from 2023 called Found My Way.
I suggest listening to this full record immediately after the single. Not only is there plenty to offer there but you can get some different glimpses into how he approaches his songwriting and gives different emotions and layers to his tracks.
This was a perfectly balanced track dynamically that hit with that colorful character and tonality that pulls at you.
This is an artist well worth diving into a bit deeper. You should just go and do that now.
Start with "Peace of Mind" and work your way back. It's more than worth your time and it's a lot of fun.
Take a swim through the musical soundscapes of the soulful Jo James and remember where you heard this first.
