The new single from Dustin Morris is a unique one, but incredibly addictive, very danceable, and showcases some brilliant songwriting technique that gives you surprises around the corners almost non-stop, all in this one track.
The song is called "Some Dreams Weren't Meant To Be", and at its start, you get a sort of soulful, almost Blues-like approach that breeds elements of vintage tonalities with outstanding keys combined with acoustic guitar. The acoustic guitar gives off a lot of that Blues kind of feel, but it's got a great twang to it, while the keys have the vintage Soul approach, still leaning towards Blues of course, but giving you a little more thickness in the track itself.
Right off the bat, the textures of the acoustic guitar and the keys are beautifully done. You wouldn't think those two would mix so well, but they do seamlessly here. You also have live percussion, which puts you right there in the moment with the song, and there's something about it that really gives the feel of a live performance.
As the song starts, you have a sort of slower pace. It's smooth, sultry, the vocals are just pouring out soul, and you're really getting a grasp of the groove of things.
His vocals are totally addictive. He sings with swagger and a sort of attitude, in a sense. It's got a way of pulling you in.
Then, the chorus swings in. At the choruses, you have an upswing in the beat. It picks up faster, and the tempo completely changes. You have gospel vocals coming in the background in harmonies. Things become funky, and this is such a brilliant change because you just don't expect it when it happens.
That's the thing about this track. It comes at you with some outstanding changes, and they kind of just slap you in the face.
Going back into the second verse, it slows back down to that classic vintage Blues feel and comes back into the chorus again, picking up pace once more.
This was full of so much life, color, and flavor, along with a brilliant slew of influences that all come together to create something that's got its own atmosphere.
It's not reinventing the wheel per se, but it is putting together different tempos, changes, and even genres in one track.
This was refreshing.
The last chunk of the song suddenly leans into this reggae approach. Fall right into this groove pretty quickly as well, but it's such a cool change-up. Again, you're not really expecting this, so when it happens, you're sort of taken aback by it.
This leads into a classic gospel soul approach, hands in the air shaking about, just a beautifully lush feel and aesthetic.
So, this track, listened to from beginning to end, gives you a bunch of different styles, and the way he bends those genres so freely is absolutely amazing.
That's what really grabs you about the song.
Yes, the vocals are awesome, he's got vivaciousness, he's got soul, he's got a sultry tonality, the whole thing has passion behind it, it's got heart, loads of personality, but it's the song itself and how he put it together that really blows you away.
This was such a unique blend of genres, but more so, a perfect way to arrange them together and make it all flow somehow.
This was such a cool song that after I heard it, I absolutely had to ask him where this came from or how on Earth he put it together.
So, why do you listen to this track, which is exactly what you should be doing now; read through our interview with Dustin below.
This is a song that you should listen to a few times just to be able to soak everything in.
I can't say I've heard anything quite like this before, and it really pulled me right in.
Buzz Slayers: Let's talk about "Some Dreams Weren't Meant To Be"! This track had such a fresh jive to it! I love the colorful and soulful approaches! Where did this single come from?
It was a couple of years back and I had just gotten out of a roller coaster relationship. I guess I expressed myself in song, as we do. I also couldn't decide how I was feeling since the emotions were changing so quickly. Perhaps that's why there's so many sonic turns in this track.
Buzz Slayers: I'm hearing a few different approaches on this track! Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
It definitely spans the board. From the classics: The Beatles, The Eagles, Stevie Wonder and David Bowie. Afterwards it turned to Jeff Buckley, Fiona Apple, Ben Folds, Arcade Fire, St. Vincent and the list is ever-growing.
Buzz Slayers: Did you record this at a home setup, or at a big studio?
I do most of my work at the Audio Lab, here in Boise. I'm fortunate that one of my best friends, Steve Fulton, runs one of the top studios in Idaho. He also plays keys on the album and I play the mandolin and trumpet in his band. I really dig how the music scene here works together.
Buzz Slayers: How did this all start for you as an artist?
I've been lucky enough to play music professionally for over 20 years. In the last decade I traveled with my band, Edison, throughout the country until we played a sold out Red Rocks. I've lived in Boise, ID for the last six years and have been touring regionally while releasing over 18 new studio tracks.
Buzz Slayers: What are you performing on this song?
On this tune I'm singing and playing the acoustic guitar. I play several instruments but was lucky to have friends (much better at those instruments) step up and help me out. I love the color that multiple players can add.
Buzz Slayers: Are you performing live right now?
I am! It's one of my favorite things to do. I have a few cool Winter shows on the books and next year's calendar is starting to get scribbled in with ideas of festivals with a bit of regional touring.
Buzz Slayers: Now that this is out, what's next for you?
This is the fourth song off of my new album. 'Some Kind of Magic'. I have another four songs to release as singles and afterwards start pushing the entire record. As a matter of fact, I finished my vinyl press order today! I'm so psyched to have vinyl!!
Buzz Slayers: Who's in your headphones right now?
Dojo Cuts
Buzz Slayers: What would you tell people they can expect on this release?
I want it to make you feel but more importantly, I want it to make you move.
Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?
Just thank you for all of the love and support during this ride so far!
