A Pop Release from Floorplan, A Group That Exists Within The Universe Of A Film

A fresh release from Floorplan delivers an edgy but super colorful pop single that breeds a lot of honesty, simply because of where he's coming from with everything and how open he is about letting all of that out.

Before we get into the lyrics, the music of this track is outstanding. The whole thing has a heavy-handed groove; you end up just bopping along with it automatically, and the vocals come through with hook after hook. Even the verses have hook melodies in them and end up bouncing around in your brain for hours after the song has already ended.

This is a track that breeds a mix of styles, all still holding steady under the pop umbrella and keeping in mind the fact that it delivers mass amounts of personality along the way.

I think it's that personality that you end up getting attached to in the first place, but soon enough, those hooks just invade you. They are subtle, smooth, and really flavorful.

This is a pop song that doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel, but rather takes things into a different direction by blending these vast undertones with sort of edgy overtones.

That vocal approach is also something that showcases a lot of that pop sensibility as well.

The thing about "Payback" is that it's quick. This song is just over 2 minutes in length, although it doesn't feel that way because again, it's got all those hooks in it.

This is definitely attractive and deserves to be on the airwaves everywhere.

The track displays a situation where someone is looking back on their relationship and opening their eyes to certain aspects of it.

It's a sentiment that makes a lot of sense, simply because I feel like a lot of us have been there.

After you have split up with someone, you might look back and wonder why they did certain things, only to realize maybe they did it purposely.

It's a song about someone who did things despite the other in the relationship, and being able to realize these things in hindsight is something a lot of us have been through.

I certainly have, so the song was very connective for me.

I'm sure it will be for plenty of us who hear this absolute pop-banger.

As the song unfolds, it kind of grows in certain aspects. More synthesizers come in with pads that add that spaciousness in the underbelly of the track, but they're also playing hooks as well.

The whole song is just layers of brilliant melody and tone, texture and sound that all come together like puzzle pieces to create a particular kind of atmosphere.

This is an atmosphere that's super easy to fall right into, and I found it not only  enlightening but also refreshing.

Now, this track is actually part of a three-song EP that is self-titled, and the other two songs on the record also showcase different levels of emotion, giving you other sides of the group's personality and situation.

This is someone a bit unafraid to let all that inner thought and feeling out for everyone else to soak up, which was awesome, music.

You want honesty and something genuine. This is a very authentic set of songs that is a little vulnerable, but in a good way.

Out of the three, "Payback" is absolutely the radio pop single, but the other two have so much to offer as well.

Here's the kicker...

Floorplan is the group from the SXSW thriller movie Sweetness, directed by Emma Higgins.

The group exists only within the film's universe, so everything you're hearing is based on the characters in the film itself.

The vocalist of the group, Herman Tommeraas, plays Payton Adler in the film, and every story and emotion you hear is based on the character himself and what he's been through.

All that personality you hear, is the character's.

What a genius idea. To have a group that exists within a film giving such authenticity and heavy-handed songwriting, emotion, and impact.

I'm really happy they ended up releasing this as an EP itself because it's brilliant.

After hearing the single initially, I knew I wanted to have a chat with Herman about everything.

We have definitely included a link to the film's trailer below so you can check that out along with the single itself.

This is all really cool, so you don't want to miss out.

After checking out the trailer and some music, make sure you read through the interview below.

Remember where you heard it first.

All answers from Herman Tommeraas, (Payton Adler in the film)

Let's talk about "Payback!"! This track was edgy but colorful at the same time!  Where did this track come from?

I had the idea of “Payback” several years ago, when I was 17-18. My ex broke up with me, and the year after, it really felt like everything she did she did to make me mad. Almost like a big payback. I thought the idea was cool, and I started writing stuff down. It wasn’t until way later that my bandmate had experienced the same, that we actually made it into a song. Funny how things work out sometimes.

I'm hearing a few different approaches to this single! Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

I listened to My Chemical Romance and Paramore a lot when I was young, and a fair share of Jimmy Eat World. They all have their own influence on the music we’re making now.

Did you record this at a home setup, or at a big studio?

We did some recordings at home and on the road, then finished everything in the studio, both in London and LA. Sometimes I even record ideas on my phone, just so I don’t forget them.

How did this all start for you as an artist?

Music has been a big part of my life, and therefore I’ve always dreamt about contributing to the music world. There was no other plan for me.

Are you performing live right now?

Not right now, currently I’m laying down on my sofa, enjoying the weekend. The next few weeks will be spent writing and making music.

Now that this is out, what's next for you?

Hopefully, some more travel. We are all longing to do a tour at one point, so that’s what we are gonna work towards.

Who's in your headphones right now?

Yungblud! That guy is killing it!

What would you tell people they can expect on this release?

I hope people will be able to see themselves in some of our stories that we tell through the music. This EP is for the fans who believe in us.

Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?

Thank you for being you. Thank you for being true. We get to live our dream because of you!
