A brand-new EP release from Mirby pulls together a slew of influences in genres to create something that feels honest but also slightly whimsical, humorous, and character-delivering, as the record delves into some personal spaces, but does so in a way that keeps things colorful.
This is an EP that goes pretty deep into different situations, loads of inner thoughts, and again, this lush persona that you end up really loving by the end of the record.
Aside from the lyrics being something that showcases a certain level of vibrancy, honesty, and a fun portrayal of vulnerability, the music itself is so diverse that it's incredible.
The record starts with the title track, "Like This", which works wonders in terms of introducing the EP itself, as you're going to get some of those fun lyrical and vocal Staples that you'll hear throughout the rest of the record.
This track is super fun, danceable, blends indie-pop with a funk and outside-the-box songwriting approach, even blending elements of hip-hop, and more to build something that feels different but still addicting and coded in pop sensibility.
This song certainly introduces you to that powerhouse of a character behind the music, and it's something that stays with you.
She sings with an almost animated approach, keeping things light-hearted and fast-paced while the music hits all kinds of melodic and genre-bending tonalities.
The track is followed by "Biosphere", which is a single that portrays a little bit more of a smooth, almost cinematic pop tone and does so with airy synth pads, smooth vocal melodies, and a more silky performance overall. There's a certain kind of elegance that comes with this track, but it also still sticks to this, almost quirky and colorful pop underbelly, so that the same character shines through.
Probably the most humorous and also honest track on the record in terms of keeping things light-hearted is the third track called "What Is Sexy?".
The title of this one pretty much says it all. She's taking a very personal approach but keeping it fun and humorous while still holding on to this character, which is so important because that's the element that hits you hardest with the entire record.
It's bursting at the seams with this personality, and she's actually giving pieces of herself with her songs, but she's just doing it in her own quirky and fun fashion while remaining very honest and vulnerable.
She's not letting the vulnerability take over. She's still letting you know she's there to have fun and things are a little loose, but they do have some levels of depth to them that have actual meaning.
She's telling you her stories and thoughts in her own way, and that's part of what makes it so unique.
As the record continues to unfold, you get more genres that are laced in, more classic and funny lines that are super memorable, and a lot more pop in the mix. She is really able to build something particularly addictive here simply because she relies on that wit in lyrics and peppers in that humor throughout the whole record while creating these incredible songs that are either danceable, cinematic, or beautifully woven.
Track on the record is called 'Gone", and this is perhaps one of the more serious songs that you can tell has a lot more depth and emotional pull for the artist.
This is a beautiful contemporary pop song that feels orchestrated and performed with a lot of heart. It still touches on her normal characteristics but remains a bit more serious because it's an impactful song for her.
This is the song on the record that hit me the hardest because it's so relatable to a lot of us.
It's a beautifully constructed single, and it was wonderful to see this side of the artist on the record a little more.
It showcases how she really can bring all the different sides of who she is to the table when creating music.
This is one of the more robust examples of a record that has been created with fewer boundaries or walls built around it; it doesn't conform to certain kinds of genres, social norms, or anything else for that matter.
This was a fun, genuine, and heartfelt record that showcased a young person going through life in many different facets, and how she's able to tell those stories and put them together on record so articulately is actually quite incredible.
I would suggest listening to this entire thing from start to finish because then you're collecting all the stories together and you're getting all the pieces of her that were meant to be had.
Do not miss this release and remember where you heard it first.
