The new single from louderman brings out a very warm sort of tonality with layered acoustic guitars that give off a smooth but addictive progression, additional instrumentation that sounds like both saxophone and clarinet, and live percussion, along with double-tracked vocals that really lay a thickness when it comes to melodies, hooks, and lyrics.
This is definitely a track that pulls you in in terms of those lyrics as well. Right from the get-go, you can tell this is a song that comes through with such a descriptive style so that you really get the sentiment pretty loud and clear.
The track is called "The Size of This Room", and it feels absolutely like he's singing about a room that's putting him too far away from a person he wants to get closer to.
It's kind of a love song, in a sense. It describes how he's across the room from this person, but his feet can take him over there. He can get closer. He can talk to them.
Although the size of the room is far too big, he's going to make his move, and right off the bat, he gets the feeling that he wants to wrap his arms around that person.
I love the way he articulates those lyrics because they're so descriptive that it just paints the entire picture in your head. You end up imagining yourself in a big room with someone across from you, thinking all these thoughts and pondering what would happen in a situation like that.
The funny thing is, it's not an uncommon situation or sentiment.
It could be love, it could be infatuation, but either way, it's affecting me, and all you can think about is walking across that room to that person, to get closer.
Now, this is just how I interpreted the song; others may take it a little differently, but for me, the sentiment was pretty loud and clear.
Because of that, it's very connective and relatable. He is an amazing storyteller and it comes from such a personal perspective that after you listen to the song, you feel like you know him a little better.
I definitely like that because the song has loads of character attached to it, and in turn, that's what you get attached to as well.
I love songs that let out that inner thought. It's like what his mind is thinking at the time. His inner monologue, so to speak.
Now, the instrumentation combines those wind instruments with acoustic, percussion, great bass guitar work, and the vocals have this sort of classic undertone to them.
You can easily tell that he's influenced by different eras and elements of classic rock, from Bowie to artists like Lou Reed. Or at least that's what I'm hearing in the song.
The whole mix and tonality of this track beckon that vintage sort of rock underbelly, and, in terms of nailing that aesthetic, it's amazingly done.
It also has that contemporary vibe because of the wind instruments laying in bending notes and adding a little more depth and texture to the song as well.
It's a song with layers, but it also has a semi-stripped-down kind of feel.
It's strange that I say that because it comes through lush and full-bodied, but I think it's just the fact that you're so soaked up by the lyrics in the story, that it just feels like a singer-songwriter kind of track.
When I listen to the song, I can easily hear it in my head with just the acoustics and vocals.
This is a track that has the rare ability to put you in the moment with it.
You don't get that all the time, so when it comes along, it's really fun to soak in, and it's quite refreshing.
He's got some great hooks in there in terms of melody, even in the verses, but the chorus is absolutely the best.
The song also sort of grows in intensity, without going over the top.
It builds up in terms of those layers. He starts laying in vocal harmonies and a lot of the instruments come together towards the end of the track in that final run-through of the chorus.
This brings it to a sort of climactic point, and by that time, you're probably singing along with it already.
This is beautifully done, really boasts an amazing, almost cinematic undertone, but also a bit of emotional push at the same time.
Again, none of it is overdone; but instead, really well-balanced.
It's a song that is light-hearted, but you can definitely get engulfed by the sound and the story.
I would suggest listening to this one with headphones on so you can really take in all those textures, instruments, and lyrics.
Remember where you heard it first.
