If there was an EP I've been waiting for, it would be the new drop from Boomer Baby Sounds, and I certainly wasn't disappointed because this record hits such a great range of rock approaches with these big, robust, and lush soundscapes and still managed to hone in on a vast underbelly that leaves the songs feeling semi-cinematic and sort of spacious.
This was an endlessly fun record, and you can tell that the band had a great time too because the whole thing is vivacious and vibrant, with electric performances and loads of attention paid to the tones of their instruments.
You have guitar tones that hit the sweet spot with a perfect edginess, but isn't super over the top, so it works great, but they also have hints of reverb effect on them at times, so that adds to the depth of the record a bit, along with having that cinematic backbone come in just right, with the perfect amount of aesthetic.
There are a few surprises around its corners, and this is absolutely an EP that you should listen to all the way through, from beginning to end.
It's four tracks and spans about 16 minutes long so you definitely have the time to do it, and if you are a fan of cinematic rock, then this is absolutely for you.
The EP is called I'm Your Huckleberry Now and the title track of the record is definitely one of the best ones.
Do you have that robust guitar tone, giving an alternative rock sound, but you also have these kinds of synths that are in the far deep background, and that also adds to the layering of how the song comes together and why it feels like it has that depth to it.
The song also has some outstanding progressions and changes that kind of surprised me and absolutely showcased how this band thinks a little bit outside the box when it comes to writing songs like this.
I listen to this song, and even though it's a heavy kind of rocker, I can hear it in an acoustic form in my head perfectly.
That's how cool the progressions are on this single.
The drumming also has a bit of that wet mix with touches of reverb, so the whole thing has that bit of a sense of something big. It's sonically big.
As the song progresses, it hits the choruses, which come in with really cool and unique vocal harmonies and melodies, and the whole thing is just inventive and slightly experimental, but not over the top.
The vocals are definitely sort of in your face. They're always melodic, but they have a unique tone to them that sticks strong throughout the entire release.
"Dream Girl" is another song that took me a bit by surprise because this leads you in a bit of a different direction.
This is very key and synth-based. It's got pianos, synth pads, live percussion, and it just has a bit of a theatrical feel to it. The pianos are performed amazingly, and it goes along with this almost 1950s-style drum beat.
Just when you think you've got a handle on where this song is going, it changes up, new synthesizers come in and breed more of an 80s rock feel, and then it opens up into a heavier sound but still keeps this amazing and heavily melodic approach.
So, this track in particular is like a track written in the 1950s but brought into a current platform. They took this amazing songwriting format that is completely vintage and made it something heavier, harder hitting, and refreshed it to make it their own.
This was a super cool approach and not what I was expecting on this record at all, but it worked smoothly and seamlessly.
Probably one of the most anthemic tracks on the record is one called "I Feel Something", which showcases not just an alternative rock feel but it hints at things like grunge and beckons a kind of old school Weezer sound with some of the guitar work.
You do find yourself paying a lot of attention to the lyrics on some of this stuff and that's because the mix is really well done, also.
The vocals sit on top of everything perfectly, but nothing is overpowering about it.
The dynamic balance of this record was very well thought out, and it comes through naturally and with an amazing forward-moving flow that is true throughout the entire EP.
I would have to say that the guitar work across this record is the most imperative part of the whole thing, to me. For me, the guitars really accentuate not only texture, tone, and melody, but they boast this edgy but still somewhat colorful kind of approach that showcases the band's pop sensibilities but is toxic neatly under a heavier soundscape so that you get an equal balance of both.
This was an awesome release, and I definitely suggest listening to the whole thing because one or two songs won't give you the full spectrum of what the entire record offers.
Again, it's not super long. 16 minutes.
It's all well worth listening to the whole way through, and you'll find yourself humming some of these Melodies, hooks, or choruses for days. You'll also be finding yourself going back to certain parts of songs that threw you for a loop the first time around.
Just hinting at this slightly outside-the-box and experimental approach is what this record does, and because it's performed with an edginess but also a sort of Elegance, it is addictive, to say the least.
So, while you listen to this EP, take that time to read through our interview with the band below.
We've reviewed their stuff before and had interviews as well, but this really hones in on the EP itself, where it came from, and more.
Don't miss this record and remember where you heard it first.
Buzz Slayers: Welcome back!! So happy to hear a full EP release! Noticing a few songs we recognize along with some fresh ones! What a great blend of approaches! How long did it take you to put this record together?
Start to finish this EP took about 10 weeks. The AI theme was something I wanted to get into this EP. In "I'm Your Huckleberry Now" AI is speaking directly to us about its plans for mankind. In the song "I Feel Something" the savior in the song can be a friend, stranger, lover or AI...
Buzz Slayers: Do you guys get together a few times a month for rehearsal or for songwriting?
I normally write all the material then decide which songs to proceed with on the recording side. At that point I decide what I'm going for with each song i.e., record everything myself via keyboard in the DAW with various plugins, go with live instrumentation or a combination of both. On this EP I wanted to go with all live instruments.
Buzz Slayers: Do you find the songwriting process to be as fun as the live performance side of things?
While it's been awhile since I have performed live, for me they are both enjoyable in their own respects. It's exciting to create a new piece of music and always a gas to play it for an audience.
Buzz Slayers: You have been releasing music for quite some time! What sort of advice would you have for other up and coming bands out there trying to get heard?
Well I certainly put Boomer Baby Sounds in the same container as performers TRYING TO GET HEARD, but if I were to give advice, before you try to get heard, make sure your end product is competitive with what's out there in your music genre and then stay true to your own musical vision and identity.
Buzz Slayers: Are you already writing any more songs for upcoming releases?
Yes, I' m always writing and have a number in the hopper but I did take about 4 weeks of downtime after this EP's completion.
Buzz Slayers: What is your favorite part of doing what you do?
While recording and writing a song are a blast, my favorite part is arranging and producing the song.
Buzz Slayers: Do you usually write these songs at the same time, or are they songs written at different times finally put together?
Almost always I write songs at different times then select those that I want to record and possibly release, depending on how they turn out.
Buzz Slayers: Can we expect any new music videos coming up?
All songs on this EP will have lyric videos soon...
Buzz Slayers: What comes next for the band now that the EP is out there?
I'm working on a new classic rock flavored EP but also thinking about singer/songwriter material that's more acoustic, as well as something more electronic and synth driven. I may include some more cover songs in the future as well.
Buzz Slayers: Are there upcoming shows you want to mention?
Not at this point but stay tuned for new music.....
It has been amazing seeing the EP unfold! Looking forward to what's next!
