A fresh single release from Dottie Mai brings out a lush blend of indie-pop, elements of cold wave, commercial pop, R&B, and loads of soul, all wrapped up in this predicting and flowing single that feels good to listen to because it's sort of picks you up from wherever you are and takes you for a little ride.
The track expresses a lot of personality, and you can tell that Dottie is someone who seems to put little pieces of herself in her music, which is something I absolutely love because it speaks volumes for the artist in general.
I love the way this was produced. This has an outstanding bass guitar line that really helps that flow feel completely natural and also gives it a particular kind of groove that Dottie falls right into vocally.
The cold wave elements mainly come from a certain kind of synthesizer used throughout the track, which I felt was something that gave it a lot of depth and layers. The song had a vast sort of undertone to it, making it almost cinematic in a sense.
There are also synth pads that sort of float around the tracks' ether, giving it more of that spacious and ambient feel because the whole thing has a subtle and almost delicate smoothness to it. It is a light pop track that brings together elements of dream and indie-pop in the mix and doesn't outstanding job of letting Dottie be free vocally.
Her vocals really come through with a certain kind of heart or passion. She's got a soul in her delivery, and although it's very pop-oriented, she's got this R&B style to how she sings, and that blend of pop sensibility and R&B comes together super well, especially with the synthesizers and keys, and the whole indie-pop underbelly the soundscape delivers.
"And Go" is very beautifully strewn together, and you can hear that she put a lot of thought into the arrangement of this, as well as attention to detail in terms of the tones of the instruments. She definitely had a sort of vision for this single, and I feel like that came through nearly perfectly.
There are also guitars sprinkled and peppered throughout the song, and a lot of these instruments have this reverb effect on them. Her vocals have it too. This also adds more depth to the track, building on some of the expansive sounds that help you get engulfed by it.
With all of that said, it's very hooky. That chorus is unique because it's got a very current feel, but you can tell that the track also pulls from vintage tones and songwriting as well.
You can hear a slew of influences in this single alone, and it's a track that absolutely speaks volumes for Dottie as an artist because it lets her presence really shine, but also shows how she can do this with a subtle approach and still make it incredibly memorable.
The way the single blends natural and digital instrumentation together sounds amazing, along with the tone of her vocals. The tone of her voice meshes and mends with the instruments of the track and is a very particular way.
At certain points, the song gave me a little bout of nostalgia. You can hear that it feels almost influenced by certain kinds of '80s pop, as well as having that more new school approach.
The blend of old-school and new-school feels and aesthetic is part of why the song hits the way it does. You have the familiarity of classic pop in the mix, but the current radio-friendly and indie-pop overtones, and those two things combined bring a certain vivaciousness and vibrancy to this release.
Upon listening to this track, I took a bit of a deep dive into her catalog on Spotify and came across some amazing stuff. Another single release earlier this year called "Ever The Alchemist" comes through with an edgier feel. You still have the vastness in the undertones of the track, giving it a spacious and flowing feel, but the sense and even vocals at times are a little bit harder hitting and edgier.
The song still hits an indie-pop and dream-pop style, but also leans more towards an alternative pop approach.
Meanwhile, songs like "Nobody" are far more R&B influenced in general.
So, she has these particular staples that are always sort of evident in the way she sings and in her musical productions; however, they always seem to bring something a little bit different to the table in terms of personality and artistry.
I would definitely suggest going through some of our other singles after this one because they're super worth it, especially if you dig "And Go".
There's a good amount of releases to dig through, and a lot of them have a great way of wrapping themselves around you and keeping you right where they want to.
This is an artist who, at times, can give you songs that serve as a bit of an escape. They pull you away from wherever you are and whatever you're doing, and put you in her world for a chunk of time.
She definitely knows how to tell her stories, from her perspective, and make it feel understandable, relatable, and authentic.
No matter what, she rarely ever loses that pop sensibility.
Check this out now and listen to it with headphones, because it's one of the best ways to do it. You're able to soak in all the different layers of this single and others that way.
Remember where you heard it first.
