If you love hip hop and rap but want to hear something different, then this new release from ++ (Tireek & Tryston) is exactly what you're looking for.
The Legacy album delves deep into personal attribute using insightful and descriptive lyrics to articulate stories, and they do so with such outstanding lyrical phrasing, bringing different approaches and attempts for each individual track so that you have this full-bodied, lush, slightly cinematic, and engaging record that breaks down barriers in such a way that you can easily tell this is an album created with fewer boundaries than anything you may be used to.
Now, having said that, there's also a lot of catchy elements to the record. You can hear pop undertones here and there, but the whole thing has a slightly alternative overcoat as well. This brings out unique beats and production along with infectious flows and rapping.
The record opens up with its title track, "LEGACY", and right off the bat, you can hear the outside-the-box thinking and approach. The beat and music have vast undertones, utilizing other vocals as instruments themselves, floating through the ether of the song and giving it depth, while the upfront vocal is a constant and consistent flow.
The way this track builds is incredible, and the lyrics are amazing. The whole thing pulls you right in. It's got its own atmosphere, but then again, the entire record boasts exactly that.
This is an album that always thinks outside the box but still keeps to intriguing approaches and soundscapes so that you're always there in the moment with the songs themselves.
There are tracks that beckon slightly 90s approaches, R&B, Soul, and more. Tracks like 'WORLD DROP" display such attributes, and it's all done with a lot of attention to detail in the mix and tonality of the final product.
Loads of vocal hooks fill the air; the beat is, again, spacious and robust, but never over the top.
Everything is super dynamically balanced throughout the entire record to the point where you can actually tell that they took a lot of time to balance the levels of everything perfectly.
This is an album that you listen to from beginning to end because then you get the full experience.
In case you couldn't tell by everything I've written already, this is a record that gives you loads of surprises around its corners.
By the time you get to the 5th or 6th track, you begin to expect the unexpected.
You know it's going to be an avant-garde type of song, but you also know there's going to be memorable sections that bounce around in your head for hours or even days after they have ended.
This is that kind of album.
Throughout the course of this record's play through, you can hear a slew of influences coming in and out, along with the ability to bend genres with free will, which is something I found most intriguing of all.
A lot of the wrapping is sort of high-speed. Half of the record has this fast-paced rap approach, but it is nailed perfectly. The whole thing is pristine and has a certain kind of shimmer to it, so while the music and atmosphere can be vast and spacious, the upfront rapping is feeling all that space with a lot so that you can soak it all in.
Again, it was all very smart. The way it was woven and put together, built, and approached was well thought out. They wanted to make sure that songs had a certain kind of depth to them.
You can actually hear all of these awesome layers of texture and sound coming through on most of the songs, along with following those lyrics as best you can.
There's not a lot that's held back lyrically either. The description or detail and some of the songs lyrically, are outstanding. They can really paint a picture in your head as songs unfold, but also give you this kind of edginess that lets them pack a punch.
Like I said before, it blends an alternative pop soundscape with hip hop, and because of that, it's very unique.
There's a lot of crew vocals throughout the record. This is where there's a group of tracks recorded at once. Usually singing the same hook, some of them being more up close, while others, again singing that same hook, are drenched in reverb effect, letting them feel distanced.
This again creates such amazing depth. And this is part of what the record is all about.
This is a musical journey of sorts. It's not your average hip hop record whatsoever. It's very experimental but down-to-earth and grounded at the same time.
Listening to one or two tracks may give you an idea or a gist of what you might expect, but it will not give you anywhere near the full spectrum of what the album has to offer.
I'll say it one last time, this is a record you listen to all the way through, in one shot. It is 12 tracks and spans just over 40 minutes in length.
Every minute of this record is worth it.
This is for people who are looking for something different.
It's an album created with no walls built around it.
I fell right into this, and I'm completely hooked.
But don't just take my word for it, listen to this record now, do it with headphones on because it's one of the best ways to soak in all of those layers, and remember where you heard it first.
