A new single release from Tragic Forms is a cover of an absolute classic and the impact that it gives off and the twists that it provides not only pay homage to the original but bring in a little bit of extra heaviness and comes through as a massively, sonically driving an extensive soundscape.]
These guys covered the classic "Civil War" performed originally by Guns N' Roses and the performance of everything on this track, all around, is outstanding.
When approaching a cover song of this caliber, there is a lot to consider. A lot of attention to detail was paid during the creation of this song. A lot of that attention went to the original track and making sure that this version came through as a solid ode to that version.
They also put a lot towards giving it their own twist and adding in some extra aggression which worked out here because the song is completely explosive and the energy is unstoppable.
I know what you're thinking. The guitars and the vocals. How are these guys going to lay out guitars and vocals that have the same aesthetic, precision, and yet slight looseness that the original portrays?
Well, they certainly did.
Let's start with the guitars. The guitar work on this track is unreal. The main riff is played with just as much soul and swagger as the original and it hits hard the entire time just like the drums were.
The drumming is absolutely pounding. This is one of the biggest elements that adds that drive and explosive-factor to the track.
The drum performance is not only spot on, but adds a little something just as everyone else does on this cover.
I do have to say, the guitar work here really blew me away because it was able to really capture that feeling of the original.
The vocalist of this band also took me by surprise. Not because I didn't think he could do it, but more wondering if it could be done with that same swagger and that same power.
Say what you will about Axl Rose but the guy had some intense vocal abilities.
Garrett Brooks is not only the vocalist on this track but also the guitarist. So you have an idea of how this track came to be.
This was a passion project done purely because he has been driven by songs like this his entire life.
Obviously the band is a huge influence on Garrett and whatever he's done musically before.
Not only are the vocals on point, but they carry with them that same power and fierceness that the original did.
Of course, between Garrett and his drummer Taylor Ball, (along with whoever else may have been involved) destroyed on this track.
Tragic Forms is known for being a metal band first and foremost. These guys have records released with intense, thrashing, and classic metal approaches that hit hard and robust.
Upon listening to the approach and the precision of how this song was done, I had to check out some of their back catalog and it is ridiculous. These guys have some massive albums, EPs, and singles that all showcase their love for heavy music and how they have been able to infuse these influences into their records.
One of the things that intensifies not only just the single but their entire catalog as I've heard so far, is their energy.
I'm not sure exactly how they do their thing but it feels almost like they record a lot of the stuff live on the floor and then go back and overdub afterward.
It definitely seems like they're feeding off of each other's energies during their music and it gives you the vibe of a live performance because of that electric and intense energy.
Listening to a band and automatically knowing that they're going to be crazy live is kind of a rare thing.
You should check this track out not only because you love G 'N R and want to hear how well these guys actually cover the single, but also if you love heavy music, metal, melodic metal, thrash metal, progressive metal, all of that, then you're going to just love this band in general.
Don't just take my word for it though. Listen to their cover of "Civil War" and then check out their previous releases, especially an album released in 2023 called Arms 'Round The Armistice.
Trust me, there's a lot to soak in here and you can sing along, bang your head, or move the couch back in the living room and mosh around.
This is one band that puts a lot of love into what they do.
Check this out right now and remember where you heard it first.
