A new single release from The Ocelots delivers a very personal approach and this comes in the form of contemporary and indie pop vibe soundscape, but it's really more the character and personality that you end up getting attached to because the lyrics of the track are so detailed and descriptive with little hints of emotional backbone, you find yourself connecting to it very quickly.
"The Good of a Bad Year" is a song that makes you think and as it unfolds, and those lyrics go on you start to paint pictures in your head vividly. This is due to a few things. The first is that he's so descriptive with those lyrics again. He's able to really get into letting out these inner thoughts and as that happens it makes you think about whether or not you appreciate some of the good sides of a lot of things that happened to you.
For me, the song was about exactly that. Do we stop to appreciate the positive? And if we do, do we do it enough to give it recognition?
That was kind of a beautiful sentiment to me and the way it's expressed during the track is so personal and so rich that you really get engulfed by that aspect.
The song is a piano-driven pop ballad of sorts, and I love the light, jazz-style drumming and, sort of, warmth that the song gives off.
That vocal delivery is so beautiful and really does let the song come through with a certain kind of authenticity, so you really do feel like it came from someplace real.
As the song plays on and gets a little bit more intense, you start to feel it in your bones and that to me was a wonderful experience because again, it's so connected from the beginning that by the time it gets towards the second part of the song The vocals get bigger. The piano and the drums get a little more heavy-handed in their performance.
There are gospel-like vocals that fill the space in the background, and all of these add textural layers to the song that make it more robust and because of that, it does get more intense.
The single comes with a music video and it's just the singer and performer sitting in front of a piano outside and its simplicity still just draws you in.
At a certain point he started playing his harmonica and that also added a different kind of texture to the song at that point which was in a perfect spot and that also tells me that there was a lot of attention to detail paid during the song's creation because the arrangement is really well put together.
No matter what, this song has a certain kind of character and personality to it, and that to me, is the thing that really wraps itself around you and keeps you right where it wants to.
I think that we don't get enough music like this these days. Songs that have to do with letting a lot of inner thoughts out. Being able to express certain things openly and freely.
This track really affected me in a certain way and, again, it made me think.
I am a big fan of music that makes you feel and think, and this song certainly did both because of its words and its performance.
The whole thing was incredibly well woven and had a certain heart to it that gave it a genuine underbelly.
This song is one of two singles that have been released from the band's forthcoming album that has been slated for early 2025.
You can check out both songs but I would certainly start with "The Good of a Bad year" so you can really feel the kind of emotion it delivers.
Remember where you heard it first.
