An engaging and almost theatrical single from Matt DeAngelis just dropped, and it has an amazingly classic and almost vintage tonality to it, from the slight echo on the vocals to the piano and keys used as the main instrument of focus. It comes through as a sort of power ballad that has some layers and depth to it and takes you on a personal kind of journey from the point of view of a musician on the road.
One of the things that hits hardest about "I'm Just The Keyboard Player" is the lyrics and how they display that unique point of view from the keyboard player of the band as he plays shows and sort of works himself to the bone.
The track has such a great lyrical approach that tells an amazing story from that first-person point of view, giving it so much character that it's impossible to turn away from.
This is a very unique track for the artist and stepped outside the norm just slightly because Matt often has a classic rock tonality to his music.
Sometimes it's full band, sometimes it's more stripped down and acoustic, but I haven't heard a track like this from the artist yet, and I feel like it's such a brilliant step in a direction that opens him up more to honing in on this amazing soundscape he's begun to delve into.
It's a piano ballad, it's got the classic rock aesthetic all over it, the synths and keys perform the lead solos instead of guitars; everything is very well placed in terms of where the choruses are. The whole arrangement of the song as a whole is perfected.
This is an engulfing track. You kind of get washed away with it and because it's piano-based and it's got such a memorable melody even in the verses, it feels so theatrical as I mentioned earlier.
It's unique because it gives you the vibe of a live performance, which is a rarity.
I think it has something to do with the effect he's got going on the instruments. Some of the keys have a bit of reverb effect, giving them distance and the aesthetic of performing in a slightly larger venue. The vocals have that echo effect and also give that same feel in terms of performing at a venue of some type.
So, not only do the lyrics take you on this sort of personal musician-based journey, but the way the track comes through tonally also fits that bill perfectly.
That's how I know there was a lot of time and attention that went into the mix of the track and making sure that the feel and vibe of it had that live performance atmosphere, because that's what it's about.
Upon speaking with Matt for a moment, we did learn that this was actually quite a personal song for him.
Before being a frontman and singer, he worked with bands and often had different feelings about his place. And, he felt like he was more of a background performer.
Having these thoughts in mind, the perspective of this track comes from the keyboard player, not truly feeling like a main point of focus or an important attribute of the band.
Perhaps that's what certain roles feel like when you're in a full band.
Maybe the keyboard player does feel like a backdrop. I'm sure others have felt this before and will connect with this track.
I don't think you have to be a keyboard player, per se, to connect with this track, of course.
The theme can also be taken as something bigger. Just your own place as a person in society, or your family, or even the world.
Feeling slightly uncomfortable or wanting more out of your role is something a lot of us have felt before.
In that sense, it can be more relatable.
Either way, this is a track you will definitely remember because it's got such a big feel to it. I love how Matt was able to write from this kind of perspective, keeping it personal but also a bit universal at the same time, while delivering a track that had a cinematic and again, theatrical tonality to it, so the impact was there musically while the emotion was present lyrically.
I also adored the vocal performance on this one. Those melodies are insanely memorable. They just bounce around in your head and stick with you. You find yourself humming that melody days after you listen to the song.
There's something a bit warming about it, even though it comes from such a personal perspective and a place of vulnerability to an extent.
This is the latest in a string of singles Matt has released in the past few months and stands tall in terms of showcasing how the artist can break out of his comfort zone.
He usually has songs that are personal or come from genuine places, but this one has a special place for musicians.
An anthem for the keyboard players of the bands around the world, listen to this single now and then check out his previous releases because there's always a lot to offer.
If you like this track, you'll like a lot of his other work.
