An album release from Royal She delivers an absolute soiree of pop-coated and genre-bending soundscapes, all giving off massive personality and character, riddled with this particular kind of swagger, and almost invasively diverse.
The Befores and Afters album has a lot to say, and the lyrics often tell stories from personal perspectives, making a lot of the songs feel like they certainly came from some real place.
This helps that character development along the way, but it also gives you the feeling that this is almost like a concept record in a way.
For me, it wasn't a concept album in the standard sense. These songs feel more like chapters in someone's life, and each song tells a bit of a different story, showcasing new sides to that personality.
There's certainly not a lot of holding back when it comes to those lyrics. I absolutely love how straightforward some of these songs can be.
Tracks like " My Ex" can be pretty descriptive and performed with quite a unique swagger to boot.
The thing that hits about this record is its absolutely eclectic slew of approaches that you can tell are brought together by some incredibly diverse musical influences. This is part of why the record stands tall the way it does.
This album gives you funk, rock, alternative pop, hip-hop, and plenty more, all rolled into one fat release.
It's the kind of record where you can't listen to only one or two tracks and get an idea of what you can expect.
There's no one single track on this record that will give you a lot of the staples that the rest of the album holds, so this is an album you listen to in full.
Diving into this record all the way through from start to finish, and one shot, is the only way to go here.
Not only do you get all these different genres embedded in the veins of this record, but they're done so well and in such a unique and slightly outside the box manner, that you get addicted to not knowing what you're going to hear next.
You begin to expect the unexpected. This is completely rare when you listen to albums, and I found it insanely refreshing.
This is what I mean by saying this is an addictive record.
Not only are you getting plenty of that inner thought just spilling out for all to soak in with no walls built around them whatsoever, but you're also getting that level of freedom musically.
They aren't afraid to get hard and heavy, a little softer or more subtle, or take completely different directions from song to song.
The cool thing is that no matter what they do, there's still this glue that holds everything together.
The vocals are always on the upfront and pack a bit of a punch.
There are several tracks where you get taken back by some of the things that are being said, but there are others where you're just in all of how they pulled that song off in the end.
This release is also packed to the brim with hooks, and not just choruses, but other kinds of hooks as well.
You also get some deeper meaning and authenticity throughout this album.
The opening track, "Worth It", has some great sentiment behind it, showing a lot of honesty lyrically, and the vocal performance is very robust with not so much swagger on this one, but more melodically driving power.
The song is impactful, and that's because it can come through with an anthemic approach.
The song starts with this smoother flowing, almost dream-pop style, and later gets heavier and edgier, without going over the top.
The entire record is dynamically balanced in this same sense.
You can tell a lot of attention went into the detail of creating this record. Shaping its sounds and creating a certain aesthetic, but no matter what, it's that personality that pushes through.
That is what you really get attached to.
The whole album was incredibly well thought out, built with beautiful production that, at times, feels almost cinematic or orchestrated.
As I mentioned before, there are a slew of styles that bend and mend genres in different ways throughout this record.
This is a perfect example of an album that is built and created with fewer boundaries than you may be used to.
Songs can feel graceful, songs can feel heavy, songs can feel a little gritty, some have attitude, some are vulnerable; there's just a lot of layers happening.
This, again, is why I suggest listening to the record from start to finish in one shot.
It's worth your time, especially if you love music that just makes you think or feel in general.
This was absolutely awesome and came with a beautiful set of intensities that I was not expecting.
Take a deep dive into this record as soon as you can because it's well worth your time, to say the very least.
