Plum Tongue Drop A Lush Rock EP

ree

An EP release from Plum Tongue shells out this wonderfully woven indie rock soundscape that leans towards a sort of cinematic tonality, with experimental guitars and the energy of what feels like a live performance to go along with all of this character brimming from these songs.

The a hard day away! album starts with a track called "airwaves", and this track is very driving sonically. The guitar tones display this amazing soundscape, and although it is slightly edgy, it is also colorful and bright at the same time.

I think it's been quite some time since I've heard a record that actually combines color and edginess the way that this record does.

Now, this is a brilliant first track to introduce the record with because it  showcases some of the staples that you're going to hear throughout the rest of the EP.

However, this is a record that you want to listen to all the way through, from start to finish, in one shot.

Each of these songs tells a little bit of a different story and takes a little bit of a different approach as well.

There are a few surprises around the corners, even with this small handful of songs, and you're getting these different phases or approaches to their indie rock songwriting style, influenced by different things each time.

Listening to one track from this record may give you a gist of what you can expect from other songs, but it will not give you the full spectrum of what the EP has to offer as a whole.

Although the guitars give off that awesome sonic presence, it is super melodically backed. There are a lot of great other tones that come through, like the bass guitar, for example. The bass guitar tone on this track is really important because that's what breeds this sort of melodic, almost calmness in the undertone of the song.

A lot of these tracks display this great combination of Melody, edginess, heaviness, subtlety and softness, and personality.

The second track of the record is called "lost cause" And this track feels flowing. It's got this graceful sort of floatiness to it that makes it seem almost like dream pop to an extent.

I love the guitar work here because it shows certain kinds of approaches that give you some of that progressive element. These songs are a little bit progressive, and the riffs are slightly outside the box, but so catchy and so warm and welcoming a lot of the time. This song is a perfect example of exactly that.

This whole record is constantly thinking just outside the box but also breeding this catchy and welcoming sound and tonality so that songs have a unique way of wrapping themselves around you and keeping you right where they want to.

Songs like "opportunity" show how the band uses two different guitars at once to sort of bounce off of each other and create unique atmospheres as well.

One guitar is more distorted while the other is cleaner, and when they bounce off of each other, you get a very particular vibe and aesthetic.

Just being able to pay attention to how the different guitar tones work together and utilize that to create a specific sound in a song is very smart songwriting.

They're paving their own path in the indie rock world, and they're doing things in a way that feels right to them. These are songs that have purpose behind them and mean something to the members of the band, but they can also be very connective to whoever's listening as well.

Even if it's not just the lyrics, the music is something that feels so familiar it almost has the essence of nostalgia attached to it.

It's hard to put your finger on, but there's just this amazing warmth that the tones of the instruments and the way that they're performed deliver.

Some of these riffs on the guitar make memories of your own pop into your head as if you're scrolling through pictures from your childhood.

I love that aesthetic, and they somehow capture this along with this amazingly youthful vibrancy that gives off a beautiful energy to me. The vocal performance is key in capturing that feel.

Look, this is a rock record, and the songs are written super well. There is a lot of great edginess and again, sonic drive to these songs, but they are graceful in a way.

This is a record I would definitely listen to with headphones on, so you can soak in all the different sorts of layers and textures it gives off.

I suggest, once more, listening to this record from start to finish.

The whole thing is 10 minutes long. It's worth your 10 minutes to soak in these songs and see how they affect you.

This was a great record, and I can't wait to hear what Plum Tongue comes up with next.

Remember where you heard it first.
