The latest single from Planks focuses on the things that happen at night, and this is really about someone who has certain kinds of struggles with thoughts, a racing brain, or just focusing on their problems as they're trying to go to sleep. So, it's a very common and understandably relatable subject, but it's the way that he weaves the lyrics together and creates something that makes perfect sense that makes this so special.
I connected with this track right away simply because I have been there before. I've had plenty of nights where I would just lie there in bed and, instead of trying to go to sleep or thinking about something positive, I focus on struggles, fears, and even some unreasonably ridiculous notions that haven't even happened.
For me, this song was about not being able to put your thoughts to rest, even for a moment.
Now, this is how I took the song, and others may perceive it a little bit differently, but I definitely picked up on this notion pretty early on in the track and the way the lyrics were strewn together really just made perfect sense in terms of letting it come through on that relatable level and being able to express those kinds of inner struggles freely.
What's cool about songs like this is that they let you feel less alone if you're one of those people who struggle with it. You may not be able to articulate your words or create music about it, but listening to a song like this lets you feel less alone in the process, so it's like a gift to be honest.
I don't think that's exactly why he wrote the song. I think he wrote the song to express his own inner thoughts and get things off his chest, but it's important to understand that others will connect with it on such a deep level, and that means something.
The single is called "Things Happen At Night", and it comes through as a sort of folk rock track but also leans into Southern and classic rock as well. The guitar work is excellent, and the riffs are memorable. There's also some great percussion in the drumming that adds a little flair to the song as well, and it does give me the feel of something that would have been released in the 90s.
Some of that southern undertone and classic rock influence comes from the fact that there are organs that start coming into the background, and that thickens up the track and is a sort of vintage feeling tone to mix into the song, but it also helps build the intensity that the song delivers as well.
All of it really comes together in a way that is cohesive, and the music has a wonderful way of lining up with the lyrics, but in a unique manner.
The layers of guitars are awesome. There are acoustic and electric layers that are layered on top of each other throughout most of this track, and it adds great textures to everything, along with vocals that feel authentic and deliver some really memorable hooks along the way.
You can tell that this was influenced by some genuine classic rock and some folk as well. Both of those elements and genres come through really heavy-handedly throughout the song, and that's what helps give it this particular aesthetic. It's not completely vintage, but it's leaning more in that direction, and it's very full-bodied because the guitars and organs, live percussion, and vocals all come together with the base guitar and everything else to give you this sort of robust soundscape.
You can also hear a little bit of that southern undertone in the vocals as well. He's got a little bit of an accent and almost leans towards Americana in little bits and pieces with some of the singing.
I love a song that blends genres like that. They give you hints of influences.
As far as we can tell, this is one of the first singles from an upcoming EP, and I'm certainly looking forward to the rest of this one.
I hope that there's more of this honesty and brilliant lyrical phrasing and articulation so that more people can connect with the inner thoughts and truths that Planks is speaking about on his releases.
Absolutely check this one out as soon as you can because it's well worth it, and look out for the new EP that's coming out after this.
Remember where you heard this first.
