NYOS just released a pretty entrancing record that combines these beautiful layers of electronic sounds with live jazz-oriented percussion, and it's a set of pieces that sort of swirl around you and leave you slightly in disarray but are, at the same time, strangely addicting.
The record is called Growl, and one of my favorite attributes of this entire thing is the percussion and drumming. The drumming on this record is just astonishing at times. Between time signatures, snare rolls, fills, and everything else going on, I think the drumming doesn't just add drive to the record, but it brings the album this strange liveliness that electronic beats in a more straightforward sense wouldn't be able to provide.
Now, some of these tracks feel a bit scattered because a lot is going on. There are layers of that electronic soundscape utilizing different scents and approaches, along with guitars, keys, and all kinds of other stuff. A lot of the time, the songs are a bit hyper-feeling. They're on the upswing with fast-moving tempos, but they also provide these crazy grooves that you just fall right into.
This is an album that provides an entirely different world for you to touch. It is slightly rambunctious and wild but super well put together, semi-improvisational feeling, and brings the electronic and jazz worlds together seamlessly.
Certain tracks feel cinematic, driving, and melodic like "Harder Than Rain", which brings all those elements together and still gives you this sort of wild approach, which mainly comes from that drumming, but the whole thing falls together like puzzle pieces.
The cool thing about songs like these is you don't exactly know where they're going to go next. By the time you get three or four songs into this record, you begin to expect the unexpected, in a sense.
This is something I loved because it's unpredictable, and I like music that gives you that element. An album that keeps you on your toes is something you get pulled into a little bit deeper, and that's what happened here.
Aside from being an incredible and seamless blend of electronic and jazz approaches, the record does have an experimental feel, and they're not afraid to use effects to create a cinematic backbone and a sense of depth.
Songs like "Walking In Moonlight" certainly give you a lot of that. The song is distant with certain kinds of reverbs, with this layer of almost noise that is coating it so that you have a very unique feel, but it is encompassing and slightly engulfing.
This is an album you will get swallowed up by. I do suggest listening to the record from start to finish because it's an experience that way.
No one or two tracks will give you the full scope or spectrum of what the full album delivers. To do that, you have to dive into the entire thing headfirst.
I say this also because there are plenty of surprises around its corners.
This record is not afraid to rock out, and songs like "Alright, Goodnight", showcase exactly that.
The song hits the same elements as a lot of the other ones do, but also brings thrashier sort of punk rock vibe because the energy is still through the roof, but the guitars are distorted, and this gives it an edgier appeal.
So, this is a record that will definitely hit you in a particular way.
I can't really express enough how the energy levels of this record are really what make it so special. Yes, the instrumentation, performances, songwriting, that slight improv approach, and blending of genres is all incredible.
However, being able to display all of that with this incredible energy is really what makes the record so insanely vibrant.
This was vivacious and filled with layered textures that somehow align and create a unique atmosphere.
So, I would suggest listening to this one loud or with headphones on because then you can soak in everything it's really giving you.
There's some crazy guitar work, amazing synth and key performances, and again, that drumming is just astounding, pretty much the entire time.
So, dive into this and don't try coming up for air because there will be no time for that.
Just soak it all in and see what it does for you because it will affect you.
This is a record built with fewer boundaries than whatever you may be used to, so be ready for that, and remember where you heard it first.
