A new release from Marina Hall comes forth with a beautiful breed of honesty that is set in an almost semi-theatrical tonality in the form of a beautiful and Powerful piano-based ballad, and the emotional drive behind the song is really what keeps you there because it delivers such thick character and personality that you can't turn away.
"Closer" tells a story built from that raw emotion, and it becomes more and more powerful as the song unfolds.
Marina has an intense vocal approach, and it's just the way she naturally sings. Her voice is bountiful and robust, coming through with a wonderful sort of passion and heartfelt authenticity.
This is one of those songs you can tell came from some real place, and again, this is what gives it that character and lets you connect to everything that she's singing about.
The song is more stripped down for the first half of it. It's piano and vocal-based and that's all you need. You pay attention to those lyrics, and her gorgeous melody is what she constructs throughout even the verses of the song, and then when it gets to that climactic chorus, you're sucked right in, and you can feel the massive sort of intensity that it delivers.
This is a love song of sorts with a story to tell that I feel like a lot of people can understand.
I'm not going to give everything away, of course. You'll have to listen to the song, and believe me, you'll want to because this is a song that lets you think and feel. In my opinion, we need a lot more music that does that.
As the song plays on, it gets bigger and there are strings that come into play, bringing out this orchestrated and cinematic, vast, and vibrant soundscape.
As this happens, her vocals get more intense as well, and the entire song just gets bigger, more driving, and a way of wrapping itself around you and keeps you right where it wants to.
This track speaks volumes for Marina, especially in terms of her arrangement, composition, and songwriting in general. This is a song that has a natural and forward-moving flow; it sucks you into her world, and it serves as an amazing escape.
This is a song like reading a chapter in a book. When it's over, you have to reacclimate yourself back to whatever you were doing and whatever you were when it started.
This is exactly what I mean by an escape. It takes you away from wherever you are and puts you in her world, but the connectivity of the lyrics makes you think of yourself in certain situations as well.
For me, this caused certain kinds of memories to pop into my head, and I think that's the kind of effect that most people will have when they listen to this.
It is beautifully constructed and performed with the aesthetic of a live, in-the-moment sort of showcasing.
It all puts you right there in that moment, and once you're in the atmosphere that she puts out, you don't want to leave.
The song invites you into her inner thoughts, her emotions, her feelings, because it all comes oozing out for everyone to soak up, and that is such a beautiful factor when it comes to writing music with no walls built around it.
Marina is not reinventing the wheel. She's delivering authenticity and something that you can hold on to for the rest of the day.
That robust and theatrical approach to the entire song is something that stays with you for hours or even days after the song has ended.
This was vulnerable because she lets so much off of her chest and speaks so much of her mind, but it may have also been cathartic for her to write and release.
It certainly seems like it would be.
This is a song you want to listen to with headphones on or in the car by yourself so that you can really take in everything that it offers.
You should absolutely check the song out as soon as you can and get a glimpse into Marina's world because that's what she's giving you.
She's a perfect example of an artist who gives pieces of herself in her music, and this is likely why it hit me the way it did.
Check this song out now and remember where you heard it first.
