A gorgeous new single from Julian Taylor delivers a Southern Country tone and approach, but with the vibe and energy of a live performance, as if the band recorded everything at once.
This is an aspect of the track that really grabbed me. Just that aesthetic of being in a room and listening to them play this song was outstanding.
Obviously, I wasn't there, so I'm not sure if that's exactly how it was done, but it just gives you that feeling. I think that Julian has a natural knack for approaching songs with character. A lot of his music portrays robust amounts of personality, and I really love that about it because you end up getting attached to that aspect over everything else, most of the time.
He is someone who puts pieces of himself into his music, but also does things with a very well-balanced approach.
This track is lush with instrumentation. It's got acoustic guitars, fiddles and violins, and live percussion, plus more. The combination of everything, along with his very warm and inviting vocal tone, is something that gives the song such an attractive soundscape.
This song welcomes you right in from the get-go, and Julian is very descriptive with his lyrics as he approaches the song with a sentiment that I feel like a lot of us can relate to at certain parts of our lives.
"Drive", to me, is a song about driving along for hours and hours, looking out into nature and thinking about how its unconditional love is so prevalent, yet a lot of us don't pay any attention to it.
There are so many things about nature that showcase its heart.
The single focus is a little bit more around how we, as people, should be showing each other the same kind of compassion.
Everyone would be much better off if they learned to love one another to an extent. This is a well-known sentiment, and I love how Julian incorporates nature into that mix.
The way nature has an unbound love, and how it grows.
If we learned to have that approach to humanity, imagine what can be done.
Now, the song isn't all that serious, but it's definitely something that boasts an ideal that we all want to attach ourselves to.
Now, this is how I interpreted the song. Others may take it in a little bit differently, but for me it was pretty clear. I absolutely connected with everything that he sang about, and it absolutely helps that he's got this naturally soulful voice that feels good to listen to.
There's a lot of beauty to a song like this, and some of his descriptive and detailed lyrics really depict plenty of that. He paints a great picture as the song unfolds, and you can clearly hear much of his Southern and Country influences coming into play.
We are no strangers to the music of Julian Taylor, and he never ceases to amaze, to be honest. He always takes a little bit of a different direction and is not afraid to branch out into different styles and approaches.
The progression is classic, the rhythm gives it life, and his singing once again brings that character into play.
The strings really add a lot in terms of texture. It balances out with the guitars and vocals pretty amazingly, and the percussion adds great backbone, but again, it all falls together like puzzle pieces.
The energy of this song is completely infectious. Once more, it's not overdone. It's all very tasteful, mainly because Julian knows exactly how to perform.
All the instruments complement each other, all the performances complement each other, and the song has a great way of wrapping itself around you and keeping you right where it wants to.
This is also quite a perfect song to introduce you to Julian's music as well. If you're unfamiliar with the music of Julian Taylor, "Drive" is great for opening the door into his stuff.
This single follows an anthology that was released earlier this year called Anthology Vol.2, which is absolutely outstanding. The album consists of 21 songs, each giving you a different view and aspect of the facets of the artist and his personality.
A lot of them have that amazingly warm tone he's known for, and I think that you'll find yourself really engulfed in his performances across the board.
