Liquid Pennies Return With A Huge Album

ree

Liquid Pennies let their psychedelic side out of the box with their new album release, as it blends loads of color and texture in the form of rock and indie-pop, alternative punk, and more, but does it in a way that feels vast in its undertone and with a catchy pop overcoat almost the entire time.

The new album is called Fore, and they don't waste a lot of time diving into that psych-pop kind of tone with their first track "Tapered Scape" which certainly serves as an excellent introduction to the record, as it does start showcasing some of the finer staples that the band will present throughout the rest of the album itself.

Even having said that, this is an album you want to go through from start to finish in one shop because there's so much to offer, surprises around it's corners, and some outside the box song writing that leans on the experimental side of things but does so in still such a catchy framework that you start to become enveloped in the atmosphere that it all presents.

Songs like "Slight Skewer" give off layers of vibrant guitars with fuzz-toned distortion, creating a wonderfully addictive lushness that comes through with rolling melodies on top of each other.

I also love the way the drums were recorded on this record. They feel almost vintage in the way that they were tracked.

They just have this classic aesthetic to the tone and how they were recorded. They're not overpowering or just there to drive the songs; they are more a part of the songs themselves, and although they do add some drive to certain tracks, of course, they also give a liveliness to the music as a whole.

The vocals are almost like instruments themselves. They're often harmonizing, and even when they're not, they add this texture to the music that flows over and through everything, weaving in and out of notes and melodies, being something that you feel like you're chasing after.

They also give off an additional expansive underbelly, and a lot of times, the addictive melodies are coming from the vocals themselves.

The guitar work is an absolute key point of focus throughout this record because that is the bigger aspect of their avant-garde approach throughout this release, and comes across with this hint of looseness, which gives an almost live performance sort of feel, but you can hear everything being well thought out in terms of the arrangement in the compositions.

It's a brilliant combination of tightness and in-the-moment sort of improvisational undertones, blending indie rock and alternative rock with loads of that indie-pop and even a slight dream pop feel because of all of that spacious tonality that the record delivers all in all.

A great example of the experimental and psychedelic while remaining incredibly catchy our songs like "The Bone" which utilizes these reverse guitar effects and comes through lush and robust but still with this a smoothness and it's approach while the guitars and vocals hit these melodies that become the songs hooks and all the while you feel like you're floating through this bubbly atmosphere that seems inviting in a way.

Now, we're not exactly strangers to the band and their releases, and this is a bit of a different approach. I love it because they're creating a record that has many fewer boundaries around it than what you may be used to.

Yes, there is rock, trippiness, experimentation, loads of pop, brightness, vibrancy, color, a little edginess, melodic drive, and this again, a spacious underbelly that is always sort of there, grabbing your hand, pulling you into their world, and taking you along for the musical journey.

This is another reason you should listen to the entire record. Listening to a few songs will not give you the full experience that the album as a whole does.

Listening to this record with headphones on is an even better experience. This is an album with those layers and textures, sonic resonance, and hints of different genres that peek through all the time.

Being able to drink everything in is best done with a pair of headphones on your ears because then you get that full experience that the band wants you to have.

Or, you can just be in a car alone, but I do suggest a one-shot all the way through experience, no interruptions, and just kicking back.

Being able to build in some of their post-rock, grungy tones and heavier elements, with that indie-pop flow that they've created, is really something.

There is a particular song on this release that melted my brain a bit. It's the third track in, and it spans over 11 minutes. The song is called "Echolia".

This thing is almost outlandishly and sonically reverberating and driving.

This is one of the only tracks on the record that sort of beckon some of their previous sounds with a very heavy grunge and progressive rock tone, and it's still so experimental and so vast at the same time.

Everything is super big and sort of in your face in a way, while still keeping that distanced background.

This try can particularly put me in a trance, and it took me a few minutes to shake out of it, even though the next track comes right in.

It's so good and so overwhelming in a way that they should have a track that's 30 seconds of silence before the next one so that you can resonate with what just happened for an extra bit.

Of course, that's kind of a joke, but for me, it was something I had to sit with for a minute.

These are the surprises around the corners I was talking about.

I definitely suggest taking some time with this record because it's massive and inventive, it breathes a different life into what these guys already do and have done an incredible job changing direction in a way that feels like progression for the band.

Check this out, you won't regret it.

Remember where you heard it first.
