A brand-new release from KEYAN and Connor Kaminski delivers an outstanding array of heavy-handed and intricate guitar work that all comes together and really boasts something special. This is a song that's got unbelievable time signatures, changes, and such an intense soundscape that you get pulled into this whole thing right from the start.
"Swell" has an amazing understanding of balance in terms of dynamic texture and tone, energy, and technique. This is 100% guitar-driven although there are other elements, of course, like intense and slamming drumming, some synth work, and bass guitar.
This is an absolutely progressive track, but it has a lot of surprises around the corners, and this ultra-tightness in its performance that is really incredible to listen to.
A lot of the song is layered with two or three guitar sections, including heavier stop-go style metal riffs that again, have an amazing set of time signatures on them, and the drumming throughout all of this tightens that up perfectly.
This is the kind of track you have to listen to two or three times to soak in everything that's going on in terms of all the riffs and approaches.
You also have layers of harmonizing guitar parts that sit on top of those riffs, along with sections that have vast undertones and beautiful melodies, and I feel like that's part of the awe of the production as a whole.
The way he incorporates such intense heaviness and metal with that vast undertone and melodic overlay is absolutely addictive and blows you away the first time you hear it.
Again, this is pretty progressive and there's a lot of crazy guitar work going on, which you can see with the video guitar playthrough that's actually embedded below this article.
This is one of the best ways to listen to the song for the first time because it really showcases some of the talent used here.
It's incredible to watch and the technique ranges from sweeps to hammer-ons, , and plenty more, which is perfect for anyone who is an actual guitar player as well.
If you're just into progressive metal type stuff then this is an amazing track to hear but, if you are a guitar player this is going to blow your face off.
This is something you will literally not believe when you see it and hear it.
He's got the low string and some kind of super drop C or B tone, so it's very deep when he hits that open bottom note, and there's lots of great bends and style to his various approaches and techniques throughout the track.
It's like a soiree of crazy metal riffs and melodic textures that come together and build this sort of atmosphere.
You also have some lead stuff that's more melodic than anything else and gives a brightness to the mood of the track, so the song itself also fluctuates with intensities and moods.
It's quite beautiful, and when you watch that guitar playthrough, you can see how graceful the song actually comes across.
Some great little bridge and breakdown sections are softer and have some clean guitar work, showcasing that vastness I mentioned earlier and also how he bridges sections together and works on arrangement.
Part of the brilliance of this track is not just the technique or performance, but it is also in the songwriting itself. This song was very detailed in terms of its composition and arrangement, which is something that needs to be understood.
Yes, the guitar work is amazing, but it's the arrangement and composition that bring everything together, and that feels like it took the most time.
When you listen to this piece of music, you wonder how on Earth someone actually built it, but KEYAN certainly did.
Again, for guitar players, especially, you don't want to miss this. Trust me when I tell you, watch this video.
The single is set to be part of the kinetic EP set to drop this May.
Check this track out for yourself and see exactly what I mean. Remember where you heard this first.
