A brand-new EP release from iNNUENDO gives off an outstanding and almost outlandishly vast soundscape that comes through with theatrical undertones and a classic rock drive but also brings in several other approaches that make this quite a unique release because it builds its own atmosphere.
The on occasion EP is like sitting down to watch a play unfold and each of these tracks is like an act in that play, and throughout the unfolding of the record, you get so many textual and musical surprises that you don't know what to expect next by the time you get to the third song.
Keep in mind, this is a five-song EP spanning about 20 minutes or so and there's so much to soak in.
There's definitely classic rock influence in there but again you do get that theatrical underbelly all the time.
The songs begin in one place and end up in another as they tend to grow and expand into these massive opuses and that rock tonality starts peeking through and becoming more boisterous as the record plays on and as each song plays on really.
I definitely adore that super vast undertone that a lot of these songs have as they feel expansive and distanced which brings in that cinematic feel as well and a lot of those tracks are packed with vocals that serve almost like instruments themselves and give off slightly haunting tones that float through the ethers of some of the songs.
Now, some tracks are way more straight indie rock style, and they hit a bit harder with edgier riffs and those have vocals that are more on upfront but still do have that expansive undertone as well at times because the whole aesthetic of the record keeps to that staple feel.
It's just this sort of sonic openness and ambiance that exists beneath the layers of everything and that is part of what makes the record come through with such a robust and massive soundscape.
The aesthetic of this record is everything. The vocals play such an imperative part in the gigantic sort of sonic drive of the record, and they help give the songs all this robust character as well.
At times they're just layers of vocals close and far, harmonizing, backing vocals, and it sounds so lush that you feel like you just experienced something rather than just listened to it.
This is an EP that you most certainly should be listening to as a whole. Again, it's under 20 minutes so don't try and tell me you don't have the time.
Listening to one or two tracks from this record doesn't even give you the full spectrum of what the EP has to offer as a whole.
There are layers that you can peel back and when you're done listening to the record, not only do you have to sort of react to meet yourself back to your own reality again, but you end up wanting to listen to it all over again from the start because it's like watching a short film or reading a book.
There are so many beautiful textures happening and everything is done in this graceful way even though it's impactful, can be hard-hitting, and can have a lot of that sonic drive to it.
This is indeed a rock record but it's a unique one with a different approach and requires your full attention simply because a lot is happening.
But this is part of what makes this release so fun. It's got color, charisma, edginess, amazing progressive approaches, and that bovine and theatrical underbelly, and all of this is what makes it so atmospherically unique.
Check this record out and make sure you put aside some time to listen to the whole thing through because it's well worth it. Remember where you heard it first.
